I Thought Chris Johnson Played Running Back

Posted on 25 June 2009 by Scott Tunstall

What you are about read (I hope) is not directly Eagles-related, but it’s telling evidence of what can happen when rookies blow up during their first NFL season.

Titans running back Chris Johnson has been all over the headlines this week. First, he announced his brand spanking new nickname. As PFT reported, Chris has ditched the “Smash and Dash” moniker he shared with portly touchdown vulture LenDale White. He now wants to be referred to as “Every Coach’s Dream.” Catchy, isn’t?

Here’s a beauty of a quote from Chrissy on why he took it upon himself to change his handle:

“Because they say every team has its own identity.  I feel for me, I can’t be noticed as a group any more.  I am my own guy.’’

He may be on to something here. That pesky “group” concept that plagues NFL football is utter nonsense. Evidently, Johnson was feeling crowded by his association with backfield bro LenDale. He needed room to breathe. Separating himself from the pack and being his own man is definitely the way to go in team sports. It’s worked so well for Ocho Cinco and TO. They’re “Every Coach’s Dream” too, right?

Johnson isn’t stopping with the new nickname, though. He’s also using his Twitter account to solicit suggestions for touchdown celebrations for the upcoming season. It’s his intention to outshine Ocho and Owens in the over-the-top department.

If one lucky fan should tweet Johnson a winner, at least they won’t have to worry about paying the inevitable hefty fine:

“If it’s better than T.O. or Ochocinco, I’ll pay the fine,” Johnson said.

What a guy! That Chris Johnson is one heck of a humanitarian.

Head coach Jeff Fisher doesn’t seem too concerned:

“I’m not expecting him to do anything that will cost the team a penalty nor any of his teammates,” Fisher said.

Bless Fisher’s heart. I love his misguided optimism. Late yesterday, he added a real zinger to his initial thoughts. PFT again:

“I’m sure they’ll come up with something else,” Fisher said, according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean.  “Dumb and Dumber or something.’’

Nice one, Jeff. Believe it or not, LenDale would end up giving the smartest response in this whole charade:

“I don’t know him [Johnson] right now.  I think it’s the Pro Bowl stuff — y’all created somebody we don’t want to see.’’

Who knew White was so profound? A USC education will do that, I guess.

I’ve read where some Iggles fans are concerned DeSean will resort to similar antics. Well, thus far he’s been on his best behavior. Anything can happen over the next couple years. Jackson could become a prima donna should he reach elite status, but so far, so good. Let’s be glad he’s not behaving like a self-involved ass.
