My objection, however, is that a large number of these characters are not villains at all. Some are debatable- I personally wouldn't consider Al Swearengen and Daniel Plainview to be villains. But Marv (Sin City), Omar Little (the Wire) and Knockout Ned (City of God) are totally heroic characters. They are all criminals, but I wouldn't even characterize any of them as anti-heroes.
