It must be hard being a shot-blocking big man in today’s NBA. Sure, sometimes you get the swat. But when you don’t, you either get the ref’s whistle up in your ear or some high-flier’s balls up in your grill. Screw chestnuts — it’s more like chinnuts. Sometimes these dunkers get so damn high that the defenders don’t even bother going for the block. They just say, “OK, go ahead and cram. You got me this time, little man. I’ll be back.”
Friday night was one of those occasions. The Spurs’ Richard Jefferson saw an opening and darted towards the rim like he was Tallahassee and that orange cylinder was a zombie’s skull. The Blazers’ Greg Oden saw this, and started to make an effort to impede the drive. Bad move, big fella. Real bad move. What followed was Oden getting his mug on a poster (what are you grabbing at there, huh?), and R.J. making SportsCenter’s Top 10. Check out the video.
