Let me get this straight: Manny Pacquiao fears no man in the ring but is deathly afraid of…needles?
That would appear to be the case as the biggest fight in boxing could to be off due to “harassment”.
A report in the Grand Rapids Press quotes promoter Bob Arum.
“We appeased Mayweather by agreeing to a urine analysis at any time, and blood testing before the press conference and after the fight. Mayweather pressed for blood testing even up to the weigh-in. He knew that Manny gets freaked out when his blood gets taken, and feels that it weakens him. This is just harassment and, to me, just signaled that he didn’t want the fight.”
Floyd Mayweather’s insistence on random, Olympic-style, blood testing has so offended the Filipino Lord of the Ring that he’s now backing out of the biggest fight of the millennium, thus leaving millions on the table.
Arum goes on to call out Money May.
“Floyd, to me, is a coward and he’s always been a coward,” Arum said. “Not a physical coward, but a coward because he’s afraid to face somebody who could beat him. And believe me, Manny Pacquiao could beat him. So he’ll go his way, we’ll go our way, and that’ll be fine.”
Perhaps this is all posturing, just an excuse to create added drama for an already eagerly anticipated fight. It is hard to believe that these two fighters would walk away from the biggest payday in the history of the sport.
Silly issues such as this are the reason why the sport of boxing is caught in a full mount by the UFC. Sometimes the capitalist model of boxing fails the sport, thus making the fascist practices of Dana White seem more reasonable.
One would assume that in the near future, cooler heads will prevail and the money will do the talking. Until then, this is a suicidal move not only for the wallets of the fighters but also for the sport.
