Those BCS party crashers in Boise, Idaho, were up to their old tricks again.
Picture this: Fourth quarter, Boise State and Texas Christian are deadlocked at 10 a piece in a defensive struggle with just over 9 minutes left until the clock struck midnight on one team’s perfect season.
Desperately needing to inject life into his squad, Boise State head coach Chris Petersen sends his punting unit onto the field with a trick up their sleeves.
On 4th down, with everything to lose, the Broncos catch the Horned Frogs by surprise with a perfectly executed fake punt. Did I mention Boise State was facing 4th and 9 with the ball on their own 33-yard line? Talk about going for broke.
For Oklahoma Sooner fans it was déjà vu all over again as yet another Boise State stunner was unleashed on an unsuspecting team in the Fiesta Bowl.
After the fake, it would take the Broncos just four plays to strike paydirt, taking the lead once and for all, departing Arizona with a hard fought 17-10 victory.
If there were any justice in this crazy world, the Broncos of Boise would take their 14-0 record against the winner of the Texas-Alabama clash on Thursday to decide the true national champion.
Alas, this is not perfect, this is the BCS.
