When a team has lottery pick in the NBA Draft, the teams are looking to find that franchise player. An athlete that has the ability, personality, potential and hype to become the face of the team and fill the arena.
Once outside the lottery and late …

RB Peyton Hillis Looking to Make Some Noise in 2010
Written by Steve DiMatteo | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Dawg Pound Daily (Browns)
Much of the attention surrounding the Cleveland Browns’ running backs has been focused on Jerome Harrison and rookie Montario Hardesty. However, Peyton Hillis, the back acquired in the trade that sent Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos, wants everyone to know that he plans on getting involved in the Browns’ running game this season.
Hillis has been lining up at different positions during OTAs and made some nice catches out of the backfield last week. If Hillis is looking to prove that the Browns got the better end of the deal, and that he can improve upon his stellar rookie year, [...]
Demotion Paying Off For Payne
Written by Nathaniel Stoltz | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Chicken Friars (Padres)
Fort Wayne outfielder Danny Payne, a fringe leadoff-sort who posted a .381 OBP in High-A last year, got off to a dreadful .156/.257/.219 start upon repeating the level this year.
At 24, Payne really couldn’t afford that misstep and retain his prospectdom, and he seemingly really couldn’t afford a demotion to Fort Wayne, which he received earlier this month.
But you have to give Payne some credit. Time and time again, prospects struggle after being demoted (probably for various psychological reasons), but he hasn’t followed suit.
Payne has hit .319/.435/.478 for the TinCaps, which is exactly what he needed to do to stay [...]
Yefri Carvajal Emphatically Busts His Slump
Written by Nathaniel Stoltz | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Chicken Friars (Padres)
Few Padres farmhands have had worse years than outfielder Yefri Carvajal. Entering today’s game, the Lake Elsinore outfielder was just 11-for-85–that’s a sub-Kyle Blanks average.
Carvajal was dispatched to extended spring in mid-May to work on overhauling his swing.
Today was his first start since returning, and he made it look like the refresher paid off greatly, as he went 4-for-4.
It tells you how bad his start was that Carvajal’s still hitting just .169/.214/.225.
Carvajal is noted by scouts for his excellent hand-eye coordination, and a lot of people were high on him a couple years back as a future leadoff type. He’s [...]
Culp, DeMark Rocked in AAA
Written by Nathaniel Stoltz | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Chicken Friars (Padres)
Nate Culp and Mike DeMark, two pitchers sent from Double-A San Antonio to Triple-A Portland in the past few days, surrended a combined 13 runs (11 earned) in five innings of work today against Colorado Springs.
Culp, a soft-tossing lefty who wasn’t dominating Double-A, got the start, as the Beavers are looking to find a reliable fifth starter (Matt Buschmann, who started the year in Double-A as well, hasn’t cut it), and was pounded for eight runs (six earned) in four innings. He gets some grounders, but Culp clearly doesn’t have the stuff to do much in the high minors, at [...]
What’s next for Amar’e Stoudemire?
Written by dannysavitzky | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Basketball, NBA
Phoenix Suns forward Amar’e Stoudemire announced today that he will, too, join the free-agent powwow with the other megastars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and Joe Johnson.
After his team bowed out of the Western Conference playoffs despite a valiant effort against the Los Angeles Lakers, one has to wonder — what’s on the docket for STAT next season?
A few months ago, it was a foregone conclusion Stoudemire would depart Phoenix this summer. The last two seasons, his name was rumored wildly at the trade deadline, too. Thanks to the team’s overcoming a midseason lull and the aforementioned run through [...]

I haven’t seen a blunder like that from the Indians since they sold us Manhattan for $24.
The Yanks routed the Tribe 11-2 on Memorial Day behind a brilliant outing from Andy Pettitte. The ageless lefty (7-1) tied Yankees legend Whitey Ford for 58…
My Rant to the Baltimore Orioles Organization
Written by Lawrence Barreca | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Birds Watcher (Orioles)
Let’s not kid ourselves: The O’s organization has officially taken any hope of a brighter future and thrown it out of the window. That hope then proceeded to fall 300ft, landing with a giant “THUD!” on the concrete below. Many fans have b…
NBA Finals: How Far Is Too Far When Fans And The Media Talk Smack?
Written by Andrew Ungvari | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | NBA, Sir Charles In Charge (NBA)
There has to be a reason why the freedoms of speech, press, and religion were all chosen to be a part of the First Amendment. It was as if future generations of Americans needed to be reminded that these were the three most important freedoms on which the foundation of this country would be built.
The freedoms of speech and of the press can be both a gift and a curse because there are consequences to saying or writing certain things. Whether they come in the form of boycotts or backlash, the freedom of speech is a two-way street. If you [...]
Schein’s Organization Rankings
Written by nate | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Stripe Hype (Bengals)
Fox Sports’ Adam Schein ranks the Bengals 22nd out of the 32 NFL teams. He downgrades the team for its paltry scouting staff and over-willingness to take on troubled souls (I could list the players individually, but the list itself could destroy the server. Or snort it. Or drive it while intoxicated. Or cause a strip club brawl). I’d say Schein’s ranking is about right. I give the current coaching staff, Marvin Lewis especially, a lot of credit for overriding some of the other factors as of late. And having Carson Palmer certainly doesn’t hurt. In my mind, Schein underestimated his [...]
OTA’s This Week
Written by AZScott | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Raising Zona (Cardinals)
The Arizona Cardinals return to the practice field this week for Organized Team Activities. They will run tomorrow through Friday at their Tempe headquarters.
Some questions still remain as we head into June, only a couple of months away from training camp in Flagstaff.
Will Deuce Lutui show up? My guess is probably not.
Will Ken Whisenhunt continue to field questions about the quarterback position? My bet is on yes.
Will Matt Leinart do anything to solidify his standing as the starting quarterback? My eight ball says highly unlikely.
We’re about to head into the quietest time of the year for the NFL, if there [...]
Good to Great Debate
Written by nate | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Stripe Hype (Bengals)
ESPN’s John Clayton answered some mail and weighed in on the Bengals defense this year. Clayton said the defense will be good, but not elite. I actually agree with him – begrudgingly – but only because of the schedule. It’s a bit unreasonable to expect the Bengals “D” to be elite when Indianapolis, New Orleans, and San Diego are all on the schedule. I do think the unit could be playing at an elite level early in the season. Here’s Clayton Bengals Q and A.
Q: With the addition of Adam Jones and draft picks Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins, can the Bengals’ defense [...]

It’s Official: Strasburg to debut June 8
Written by PennSkinsFan | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | MLB
DISCUSS IT IN OUR NATS FORUM
Ok, the rumors and whispers can now end. It is official for Stephen Strasburg.
For everyone — his fans, his soon-to-be Nationals teammates and, perhaps most of all, Stephen Strasburg himself — the wait is nearly over. Strasburg, the phenom regarded as maybe the best pitching prospect of all time, will make his ravenously anticipated major league debut on June 8 at Nationals Park against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
And the Nationals are doing exactly what they are suppose to be doing, down playing his debut.
“One thing we want to remember about Stephen Strasburg is he’s a phenomenal [...]
M&T Bank Stadium Hosts A Successful Championship Weekend
Written by Joe Barnes | May 31, 2010 | Comments Off | The Ebony Bird (Ravens)
I’ve been hush this weekend because I have enjoyed three great days of lacrosse at M&T Bank Stadium, where 3 NCAA Men’s Champions were determined. I’m not a lacrosse player or a huge fan, but I like the sport, and after going in 2007, I’ve learned that the experience of seeing a sport played at the highest level for three straight days is pretty cool.
While it was incredibly hot, the stadium (and new turf) did Baltimore proud. The turf looked good, but it seemed very slippery, as the fans witnessed about double or triple the average amount of falls as [...]
