Fan Response: When’s the next time Tampa will appear in the Super Bowl?

Written by Kyle Phillippi | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | The Pewter Plank (Bucs)

Remember that time back in 2002 when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had defeated the Oakland Raiders, and Jon Gruden was sprinting down the sideline following the interception that capped off the Super Bowl victory? Well, that was one of the greatest moments, if not greatest moment, for many Tampa Bay fans. So when will Tampa make their next Super Bowl appearance?
With a new core under construction, led by quarterback Josh Freeman and second-year coach Raheem Morris, the Bucs may be a few years away from being a contender in the playoffs. But in the strange and crazy world that [...]

Rays Bums of June

Written by Dustin Staggers | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Rays Colored Glasses (Rays)

BJ Upton – You yelled at Longo, and for a 2nd straight year, your killing my fantasy season.  I’ve given up on you.
James Shields – Shields has been just awful this month, picking up 5 L’s.  He had a 5 ER, 4ER, 3 ER, and a 10 ER outing in his starts this month.  That’s not cutting it, especially from a guy who was our opening day starter.  His control isn’t an issue, hes just getting rocked recently.

The Case For Eddie House & Anthony Morrow

Written by Bryan | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | A Royal Pain (Kings)

It’s no secret I’ve got a massive basketball woody for Anthony Morrow. I’ve also got a stubby for Eddie House. Sue me. I like short guys that can set nets on fire. (I love you Nate Robinson).
Anyway, rather than bore you with my wisdom of all things small and streaky, I’ll let Pookey from EvilCowtown. Inc do so. He has a great piece touching on the benefits House and Morrow would bring to the Kings, which you can read by clicking here.
The Kings aren’t going to be major players this year and it’s even questionable for the following. Part of [...]

Richard Jefferson Opts Out: Spurs Fandom in Turmoil

Written by AnkleBones | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Air Alamo (Spurs)

According to KSAT news Richard Jefferson has opted out of final year of his contract that would have paid him $15+ million. Follow the jump to become incensed.

Spurs fans should be in turmoil because while he was shitty last season, him opting out screws the Spurs from the standpoint of the Salary Cap. This puts them under the cap for next season. But hey, that’s good right? No. Even with his $15 million coming off the books, the Spurs are still only around $3-$5 million under the cap. Since they are under the cap they CANNOT use the Mid-Level Exception [...]

Rays Studs Of June

Written by Dustin Staggers | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | MLB, Rays Colored Glasses (Rays)

Joaquin Benoit – Benoit has pretty much been lights out for the Rays since being called up.  He is a dominant strikeout pitcher who could easily close for the Rays next year if Soriano walks.  It’s unfortunate we can’t score any runs right now because Benoit and Soriano are as good of an 8th and 9th inning combo as there is in the league.

UZR Update

Written by Fetch | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Puckett's Pond (Twins)

The Twins overall have one of the best team UZRs in the major leagues. Third base’s high number is due to both some good range by Punto and the fact that no Twins 3B has made an error all season. And as you can see over at 1B, Justin Morneau’s (hopefully) improved defense is a big reason why he leads the majors in WAR, and could be well on his way to his 2nd MVP.
But a troubling trend has emerged. While the infield is very good, the outfield has struggled a bit. Given that the starting staff is stocked with [...]

A’s Dallas Braden Dealing With Elbow Tendinitis

Written by Joseph Lopez | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Swingin' A's (Athletics)

With all of the injuries that the A’s have dealt with this season, another possible injury could definitely put a serious blow to the team’s chances in the second-half. Currently 9 games behind the Rangers, the A’s are slipping out the race and could become sellers at the deadline, so it’s becoming increasingly important for the players to stay on the field and out of the trainer’s room.
Dallas Braden, who was scratched in his last start due to elbow tendinitis, is said to be on track for his Saturday start against Cleveland. But, as the SF Chronicle’s Susan Slusser points [...]

Who’s Your A’s All-Star?

Written by Joseph Lopez | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | MLB, Swingin' A's (Athletics)

With the 2010 MLB All-Star game quickly approaching, many fans are casting last minute votes for their favorite players.  While most fans forget to show the Oakland A’s some love around this time of year, I’m making my case that the A’s feature some great talent.
If it were up to me, the A’s would have four All-Star representatives: Andrew Bailey, Trevor Cahill, Ryan Sweeney and Kurt Suzuki. Okay, maybe four is too many, but believe me when I say that the A’s have some talented young players this year. Among the four that I mentioned above, Kurt Suzuki is probably [...]

July 1….Looming Big Day

Written by sfwyee | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Blue Man Hoop (Warriors)

So technically tomorrow isn’t the day where we are going to find out where all these big name free agents are headed, but it is the beginning of the betting. The biggest name out there? LeBron James. Other big names are like Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki and smaller name, Paul Pierce.  Technically, if Kobe didn’t sign his contract extension with the Lakers he’d be the biggest name out there. And to be quite frank, I don’t think I’ve heard the Warriors made one splash into each of these player’s radar. In all reality, would we be able to [...]

The Proof is in The Millions

Written by Tim Redinger | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | NHL, Sabre Noise (Sabres)

This past post season saw several NHL teams make the playoffs and succeed with rookie or journeymen goaltending.
Take the Stanley Cup finals for example.  Michael Leighton and Brian Boucher versus Antti Niemi.
There was a lot of talk early after the post season that maybe, just maybe teams will start to get smarter and not pay for goaltenders.  The start of the end of inflated salaries in the NHL?  Dead wrong.
The Philadelphia Flyers have bestowed the faith and trust of the crease at The Wachovia Center to Michael Leighton for two years for a total of #3.1 million dollars.  Not a [...]

Hawks To Offer Johnson Max Deal

Written by keithbox | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Soaring Down South (Hawks)

Michael Cunningham is reporting that the Hawks will indeed offer Johnson a max deal when the clock strikes midnight tonight.  There is a lot of misinformation out there from a lot of publications, but I have a feeling that Michael is not one that will spread misinformation.  He is a very good writer who isn’t going to write about assumptions or supposition.  If he’s reporting this, then my guess is, he has heard something from inside that this will indeed happen.
Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Joe wants to stay in Atlanta.  I would too if I could get $27 million more [...]

Lunch with the Commish

Written by Gary Harding | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Eyes on Isles (Islanders)

A couple of months ago – I was talking to a friend of mine from the Booster Club.  His name is Martin Valk.  It was between periods at an Islander game.  I was working the blog box that night, and I stopped by the table, to say hi to my wife.  Marty was there, to buy his 50/50 tickets, and he asked me if I had a minute.
Of course I did, and he explained to me that he went to a function with his Law School colleagues, and he won a lunch for four with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.  He [...]

Stan Musial Seventh Inning Stretch

Written by Ryne Gery | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Redbird Rants (Cardinals)

The Cardinals bid for the sweep is in danger. St. Louis trails Arizona 4-1 through six-plus innings. The seventh inning stretch gives us a moment to recount the action to this point.
Suppan fails to deliver.
Jeff Suppan will have to get his first win next time after a mediocre start. The righthander lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs to the D’Backs. Suppan threw 109 pitches, an improvement over his previous starts, but couldn’t finish a complete outing. He was close, but Chris Young’s fifth inning home run put Arizona up 3-1. Later, he walked pitcher Dan Haren who came [...]
