As many of you are aware – despite my ties to the Giants, I’ve been living in Southern California for years and have been subjected to Bochy’s term with the Padres and now the Giants. I’ve become all too aware of his managing “style” – it’s drove me nucking futs for YEARS. It’s really getting to the point that it’s impossible to put into words. Almost…
Here is a lovely article about Bochy from SignOnSanDiego…..from 1996. Sounds eerily familiar, no?
“Bruce Bochy heard the whispers. He catered too much to veterans. He was too impatient with young players.“I’ve heard it,” Bochy [...]

April/May Round Up: Greensboro Grasshoppers
Written by John Herold | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Marlin Maniac (Marlins)
Last but not least is Greensboro, which is pretty barren in prospects.
A reminder that all numbers for hitters are park adjusted (but not pitchers). What this also means is that, on a monthly basis, applying park factors won’t change much of the stats because of how small they are. But it will change the yearly stats because they are a larger sample. This is why you’ll see things like Logan Morrison’s season BABIP being higher than both his April and May BABIP.
And some misc Greensboro news: Marcell Ozuna [...]
Bye, Bye, To Hank “I Tanked” Blalock
Written by justin klein | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | MLB, Rays Colored Glasses (Rays)
Hank Blalock was the player who was supposed to take the slack when Pat Burrell was designated for assignment, but with a very poor performance since being brought up from Durham, Blalock has also been designated for assignment. Blalock did not see the field much, hitting .254 with a home run and seven RBIs in 63 at-bats for the Rays.” Hopefully there will be a team that wants me to play for them. … I’m not sure how the designated for assignment or released thing works out, or whatever. I’ll fly back to Tampa and pack my stuff up and [...]
Free Agent Possibilities (Offense)
Written by Bill Mayer | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Pens Labyrinth (Penguins)
After the Pens do what they’re going to do on defense, let’s suppose they have enough room under the cap to pursue a winger. A big if, I know, but let’s suppose for the sake of this post. As I said in a previous post, there aren’t many options out there due mainly to salary-cap concerns. But let’s take a look at a couple of available wingers that I think the Pens should at least consider.
Lee Stempniak scored 28 goals with Toronto and Phoenix last year. Not bad. The American-born right wing has shown an ability to put the puck [...]
43-35: What a Difference a Series Win Against the Second-Place Team in the Division Makes

Fangraphs
The Twins are now in first place by a game and a half after taking 2 of 3 from the Detroit squadron. And now that it’s July, hopefully the bandwagon Twins fans will turn their attention to football, and leave the rest of us to just enjoy our team and the rest of the season in peace. Seriously, people, baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. Even the very best team in the sport will lose at least 50 games. The Twins will probably lose 75 and still win the division.
Best hitter: Justin Morneau, .203 WPA. [...]

Part II: Five Intriguing Training Camp Competitions

Strong Safety: Michael Lewis vs. rookie Taylor Mays
The match-up between Lewis and Mays has many factors. Most importantly is Lewis’ health. He suffered three concussions last year, two in the preseason and the last one in week 5. Even though Lewis only missed one game his health will be a concern as the next concussion he suffers could be the end of his career.
Taylor Mays is a hard hitting physical stud but needs to better develop his coverage and footwork. The 49ers brought in Ronnie Lott in the off-season to help Mays with his development. Lewis just needs to stay [...]
Terrell Suggs Wins Super Bowls In The Super Bowl, NOT OTAs
Written by Joe Barnes | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | The Ebony Bird (Ravens)
Terrell Suggs is just awesome. A guy who loves to talk, loves to pump up the fans, and is a monster on the field (most of the time), Suggs is yet another example of guys with big egos in the NFL. There’s a saying us bloggers like to use which goes “Big egos equals big content.” Toss aside the fact that no bloggers say that, and it’s completely correct. Suggs had this gem of a quote yesterday on the Scott Garceau radio show, 105.7 The Fan’s afternoon drive-time program:
It’s OTAs, we’re not winning any games or any Super Bowls in [...]
NHL > NBA: Free Agent Frenzy Preview
Written by FanSided | June 30, 2010 | Comments (3) | Blog, Z Featured
While most of the media in the United States and even here in hockey-crazy Canada are paying more attention to the NBA’s open market tomorrow, the NHL’s Free Agent Frenzy, as TSN blandly points it out, starts as well tomorrow, in what should be a very busy day. FanSided’s hockey section will have it covered [...]
Lets Stop Hating the Cowboys, Redskins, and Giants
Written by Adam MacDonald | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Inside the Iggles (Eagles), NFL
C’mon guys. Every week during the NFL season (and even the offseason), we spend a good chunk of our time hating on the ‘Boys, the ‘Skins, and the G-Men. When these teams are in the playoffs, you would rather see ANY other team in the league beat them, as long as these guys don’t make it to the next round! But for a little while, the lovely people at Fansided are going to take time to put down our hateful words and work together. Crazy talk, right? I know you’re asking “what’s the the heck is he talking about?” (with [...]
Tigers Option Fu-Te Ni
Written by John Parent | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Motor City Bengals (Tigers)
Following the game this afternoon, one in which the Twins bested the Tigers to extend the division lead back to 1.5 games, the Detroit Tigers announced that they have optioned LH reliever Fu-Te Ni to AAA Toledo. The team will wait until Friday to make a corresponding roster move.
Ni has been struggling a great deal lately, walking 19 batters in just 22 innings this season including six in his last 1.1 innings covering two appearances. In addition to that, his 6.65 ERA is compounded by his struggles versus LH batters. Ni held lefties to a .113 average last season, but they [...]

Amari Spievey Becomes Third Rookie to Agree to Terms
Written by Zac Snyder | June 30, 2010 | Comments Off | SideLion Report (Lions)
It took a while but it appears the Detroit Lions are making progress on signing their draft picks.
Cornerback Amari Spievey, the Lions third-round draft pick, have reportedly come to an agreement that should be signed in the next 24 hours. The former Iowa Hawkeye’s performance in practice has him pushing for a starting spot this fall opposite the former Falcon, Chris Houston.
Fourth-round pick Jason Fox, an offensive tackle from Miami (FL), was the first to sign followed by seventh-round pick Willie Young from NC State.
First-round picks Ndamukong and Jahvid Best along with seventh-round pick Tim Toone remain unsigned.
