The final trade that involved players immediately changing hands on both sides was a deal that sent catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the Texas Rangers to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for righthanded pitcher Roman Mendez, first baseman Chris McGuiness, a player to be named later, and cash.
Quite a lot to give up for a catcher in Triple-A, huh? Find out if the price is worth it after the jump.
The Obvious
Still just 25 years old, Saltalamacchia has 240 career major league games under his belt, in which he’s hit .251/.313/.388. His stats have gotten worse every year, he [...]

Whether it was the lack of available talent in free agency; or the handcuffing of the league by Ilya Kovalchuck with has brought movement in the league to a standstill, the Buffalo Sabres have had a relatively mild and slow off season.
As July 1 rolled around and no deals for Henrick Tallinder and Toni Lydman present, you knew that we were going to watch players walk away from this organization once again. The Sabres were able to bring in two free agents in Jordan Leopold and Rob Niedermayer. But thats it. Since June 9, when the Chicago Blackhawks won the [...]

Robbie Cano went 3-for-4 with two doubles and the go-ahead solo shot in the ninth inning as the Yanks bested the Rays 5-4 to regain their two-game lead in the division.
The two two-baggers gave Cano 30 for the season, which ties him with Thurman Munson (229) on the franchise list. During his five-game hitting streak, Cano is 9-for-21 (.429) with seven extra-base hits but just three homers with three RBI.
Swish Dog (20) and Tex both went yard as well, and Cano is now tied with Marky Mark for the team lead in dingies (21). It’s the sixth straight season of [...]

When I first heard the re-signing of Chris Campoli late last night, I was somewhat tepid. It was a fair deal and fair price for someone likely to play on the last pairing for the team, but I wasn’t as enthusiastic about the deal as I was with previous Restricted Free Agents Nick Foligno and Peter Regin.
Click “Continue Reading” to find out my thoughts on Chris Campoli re-signing and the next priority for management.
Campoli now enters a huge battle for the last spot on the back six. While Chris obviously has more experience and eventually the benefit of the doubt [...]

You ever find yourself trapped in the tangled web that is Youtube? You start watching one video and then something else interesting catches your eye. You click on that and before you know it you are watching something that has absolutely nothing to do with the video you started on.
That happened to our own Zach Best today. Zach started off watching an educational video about erectile dysfunction and before he knew it he was watching a Raiders fan getting handcuffed.
Thus, Zach suggested to me that we run a series honoring the Oakland Raiders fan.
Anyone can be a Raiders fan. You [...]

With the Bills changing defensive schemes this year from the 4-3 to the 3-4, you have to think that there are players on the team who don’t fit into the new defensive philosophy. That being said, holdovers from previous regimes in Buffalo may have some trouble making the squad. The first such casualty came when the Bills recently cut last year’s 5th round selection, LB Nic Harris. One player who has been a Bill for a much longer time that could be in trouble is converted OLB Chris Kelsay.
Kelsay was a 2nd round draft pick for the Bills back in [...]

After acquiring lefty specialist Javier Lopez from the Pirates for John Bowker and Joe Martinez, the Giants made a second bullpen upgrade, getting reliever Ramon Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox for minor league pitcher Daniel Turpen.
Find out how this one-for-one swap shakes out after the jump.
The Obvious
After beating his defense-independent stats by a mile last year and posting a 2.84 ERA, Ramirez came crashing back to replacement-level earth this year, posting a 4.46 ERA more in line with his peripherals. Soon to be 29, he’s not going to improve much more. He’ll post a [...]

I wonder if Tim is still sitting…
Probably since the Reds made no deals to add maybe a bit of spice to their roster.
I was reading on John Fay’s blog where Reds GM Walt Jocketty feels the Reds roster in its current configuration is good. Good enough to make a run. Jocketty also stated that any move would likely come from within the organization.
To interpret, no mind-blowing trades are on the horizon or down the road. Jocketty said he had a couple of deals in the works, but nothing materialized. The players the Reds were pursuing are still with their clubs and [...]

In one of the quieter moves at the deadline, the Orioles and Marlins exchanged pitchers. Baltimore picked up righthanded swingman Rick VandenHurk from Florida in exchange for lefty reliever Will Ohman.
Who got the better of this deal? Find out after the jump.
The Obvious
Will Ohman, soon to be 33, is a rather generic veteran lefty reliever. He throws two pitches–a fastball around 90 and a slider around 82–from a three-quarters arm slot, and uses the breaking ball about half the time. The slider is much better than the fastball, which is too straight.
Ohman’s good against lefties (3.62 career [...]

A managerial mistake cost the Braves a win today, as Jair Jurrjens was strong on the mound but was left in too long. The Reds pounded him for four runs in the seventh and evened the series with a 5-2 win.
The Braves jumped out to a two-run lead in the first when Omar Infante doubled to lead off the game and scored on an error. After loading the bases, Eric Hinske walked to bring in the other run. Alex Gonzalez followed with a double play to end the inning.
The Reds tried to put some runs across early themselves, as Orlando Cabrera [...]

So this isn’t actually Wizards news, but I found it interesting nonetheless…
Story from Redskins.com blog…
When offseason work started at Redskins Park, there was a group of guys that would regularly get together to play Around The World down on the basketball court. This seemed like it might make a decent blog item (although, obviously, it never panned out), and when I talked to the regular players, the same names kept coming up as the best shooters on the team: Carlos Rogers, DeAngelo Hall (which we knew), and … Lendy Holmes?
“Kid’s a freak,” Chris Horton said. “I like Lendy’s game. He can shoot [...]
