Update: The Eagles are calling the injury to DeSean Jackson a back injury, and the wide receiver is being evaluated tonight.
Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson was carted off the training camp field with an injury after falling awkwardly. Jackson came up grasping his lower back and stayed down on the field.
The wideout was later helped off the field by trainers, putting very little weight on one leg. Jackson made his way to a cart and was taken off the field with his hand covering his face.
Jackson also made a brief visit to the trainers tent earlier in practice [...]

Today was the first day of training camp that introduced some live elements, where it’s basically football at its finest. Everyone is taking pops (except the QB’s), and people are knocking off some of the rust that may have built up over the off season. This is truely where camp gets interesting.
Our own Ryan Messick was at camp today when Kevin Kolb answered some media questions. The general feeling that we got from Kolb was that he was glad to get the pads on and see everyone out there competing and hitting. Although this is Kolb’s first camp as a [...]

The Braves have acquired Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth in exchange for Gregor Blanco, Jesse Chavez, and Tim Collins.
Ankiel is another left-handed bat that will cover center field for the Braves. We all know him from his first full season as a hitter in 2008, when he hit 25 home runs and posted .264/.337/.506 with a .360 wOBA and .242 ISO. Obviously that’s the best you could expect from Ankiel going forward, but I highly doubt he will ever reach it again. He dropped off to a .288 wOBA and .156 ISO in 2009 and has spent most of this season [...]

Dayton Moore has been busy today as in between trade discussions, he also managed to extend manager Ned Yost through the 2012 season. Yost took over in May after the firing of Trey Hillman and since, he’s managed the Royals to a 31-37 record.
The second half of July has been rough, but for the most part, Yost has done a serviceable job with the level of talent on the team. He has a reputation for handling young players well, and with many minor leaguers taking big strides towards the major leagues, he’ll likely get to see a handful of [...]

The long rumored trade of Ted Lilly to the Los Angeles Dodgers has finally come to fruition. Except for it ended up having the Chicago Cubs trade starting pitcher Ted Lilly, and second baseman Ryan Theriot to the Los Angeles Dodgers for second baseman Blake DeWitt, and two pitching prospects.
Ever since the Chicago Cubs season has spiraled around control, it was evident that it was only a matter of time before the Cubs utilize their best trading chip in Ted Lilly. Since signing a 4 year deal back in 2007 with the Cubs, Lilly has been the best starter [...]

The Dodgers made yet another 2010-oriented move right before the deadline, acquiring Pirates reliever Octavio Dotel and cash for reliever James McDonald and Double-A outfielder Andrew Lambo, who was the Dodgers’ #1-rated prospect not too long ago.
Do I find this move any more sensible than the other two go-for-broke trades the Dodgers have made? Find out after the jump.
The Obvious
Well, one thing is clear: The Dodgers aren’t going to miss the playoffs without a fight.
Scott Podsednik’s acquisition isn’t going to push them into the playoffs. Neither is getting Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot, or Dotel.
But, [...]

Via multiple sources, as this was reported hours ago, the Mariners have made several roster moves this morning, despite not making any trades.
Out
Milton Bradley to the 15-day DL, retroactive to the 27th. Shocking.
Justin Smoak to Tacoma. While I have previously advocated giving him lots of playing time at the ML level, he has been struggling mightily with the bat since coming to Seattle, and this might be the best thing for him right now. It’ll probably be a 1 month stint, as they give him a little time down there to work on things before the rosters expand in September.

To make room for Danny Duffy on the Double A Northwest Arkansas Naturals roster, 2009 first round pick Aaron Crow was demoted to High A Wilmington. Duffy, you’ll remember, took a hiatus before the season began due to personal issues, but posted a 2.38 ERA in two rookie league tune up starts and a start for Wilmington.
Crow has struggled all season for the Naturals, putting up a 5.66 ERA in 22 starts and producing a weak 90/59 K/BB ratio over 199.1 innings.
The Royals have a unique luxury in that of their high profile prospects, Crow is the only [...]

The 4 pm non-waiver trade deadline has come and gone, but the Tigers only pulled the trigger on a minor trade. Minor league outfielder Wilkin Ramirez was sent to the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later or cash. Ramirez was designated for assignment a few days ago in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Jhonny Peralta, so the Tigers knew other teams would get a shot at him before they would be allowed to retain him in the organization. Wilkin took part in the Futures Game during All-Star week in Anaheim (a year or [...]

Everyone knows or has heard the old bathroom rhyme, Here I sit all broken-hearted. I paid to poop but only farted. Ha ha ha. Well, it is almost 4:00 pm and the MLB trading deadline is soon to expire. And, here I sit all broken hearted.
I see many of the other teams in the pennant races making trades to improve their teams. The Reds need improving, there is no doubt about it. They need help in the form of a leadoff hitter and relief pitching. And, maybe even a veteran who [...]

Coach’s Corner: Basic overview about the spread offense
Below is a basic overview about the spread offense:
Basic Elements and Philosophies Nested within the Spread Offense
1) Shrink or limit what a defense can do and make the defense defend the entire field.
2) All 11 players have a definite assignment every play.
3) The spread attempts to create conflict for the defense, if running a play to the left, have something happening on the right to separate the defense.
4) Play at multiple tempos.
5) Make the QB a dual threat- run and pass.
6) Execution – execute well to make the [...]

After the Dodgers and D’backs made poor moves (in my opinion) with the Dan Haren and Scott Podsednik trades, those two have made a few other moves.
To recap:
The Diamondbacks traded Edwin Jackson to the White Sox for Dan Hudson and David Holmberg. I thought that move was actually very good for Arizona, and somewhat makes up for the Haren debacle.
They also made another trade, sending Chris Snyder and Pedro Ciriaco to Pittsburgh for Ryan Church, Bobby Crosby, and D.J. Carrasco. I thought the deal overwhelmingly favors Pittsburgh, although the D’backs ultimately won’t be harmed.
Then the Dodgers made another pretty shortsighted [...]

The Rays have acquired Chad Qualls from the Arizona D-backs for a player to be named. Qualls has not faired well this year in Arizona recording 12 saves in 43 games while posting a 1-4 record and an 8.29 ERA.
Qualls will be filing in for Grant Balfour who has been placed on the disabled list.
Its said Qualls has suffered by playing in Arizona this year but if your a decent pitcher location should not be an issue, especially when he tallied up 24 saves last year for the D-backs. I just dont know what his placee in the bullpen will [...]
