Written by Nathaniel Stoltz | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Baseball

In the third large deal of July 31, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired lefthanded starter Ted Lilly and infielder Ryan Theriot from the Chicago Cubs for infielder Blake DeWitt and pitching prospects Brett Wallach and Kyle Smit.
The Dodgers also receive $2.55 million in cash to help cover the contracts of Lilly and Theriot, which combine to have over $5 million remaining. Theriot also has two years of arbitration remaining beyond that.
Who won this deal? Let’s get in depth after the jump.

The Obvious
Lilly’s the big headliner in this trade, and I’ll get to him in a [...]

Haden In, Hardesty Out (At Least for Now)

Written by Chris Slocombe | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Dawg Pound Daily (Browns)

According to reports, first round selection CB Joe Haden has agreed to terms on a five-year $50 million deal.  The deal, which has $26 million guaranteed as well as a $12 million bonus, means that all the Browns rookie draft picks are now under contract.

In other news, second round pick RB Montario Hardesty will be out “a couple of weeks” after he twisted his knee Thursday.  Hardesty was expected to compete with RB Jerome Harrison for the teams starting running back gig this season.  Though the injury won’t sideline Hardesty long-term, which is good, it certainly gives Harrison “the leg [...]

Morning Practice Report

Written by Patrick Allen | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Arrowhead Addict (Chiefs)

A lot happened at this morning’s practice so let’s get right to it. Special props go out to Cory Wakeland who hooked us up with some great pictures.
There was a minor skirmish at the end of camp. The team was working out of their Wildcat formation with Jamaal Charles at QB.  Charles took the snap and the defense stayed home, rushing to the RB. One f the defenders lifted Charles up and slammed him in to the ground. The Chiefs offense did not take to kindly to this move and a minor fight broke out.
Our man on the ground Corey [...]

Pat Williams Says Hello to Toby Gerhart

Written by Dan Zinski | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | The Viking Age (Vikings)

Camp is underway, and Pat Williams is feeling frisky.
Just ask rookie Toby Gerhart, who during an early practice session on Saturday, found himself on the wrong end of a salty Williams tackle.
This wasn’t just any old run-of-the-mill second-day-of-camp blindside shot either.  This one had a specific intent.
Namely, to show Toby Gerhart who is the rookie and who is the 14-year vet.
“I don’t care who it is, man,” Pat declared to reporters after the shot, which drew applause from the assembled fans. “This ain’t college no more. They’re grown mans [sic] out there. [Bleep] Paying these college boys like [...]

Pressel Fires a 65, But Tseng Still In the Lead at Women’s British

Written by Blake Lovell | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Pro Golf Now (Golf)

We’re one round away from crowning the 2010 Women’s British Open champion, as third round play has concluded at Royal Birkdale. No surprise at the top after round three, as Yani Tseng is still controlling the tournament after shooting a 68 for the third consecutive day, and has a four-stroke lead over Katherine Hull heading into the final round of the championship.
Tseng has been the model of consistency this week and has managed to stay atop the leaderboard for the entire tournament. She once again picked up an eagle on the Par 5 18th for the second time this [...]

Padres/Cardinals/Indians Trade: Jake Westbrook, Ryan Ludwick, and More

Written by Nathaniel Stoltz | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Baseball

We have our first trade deadline three-way deal. The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Jake Westbrook and sent starting outfielder Ryan Ludwick to the San Diego Padres. The Padres sent pitching prospect Nick Greenwood to St. Louis and pitching prospect Corey Kluber to Cleveland.
Who wins this complicated swap? Find out after the jump.

The Obvious
Westbrook, a sinkerballer, is exactly the sort of pitcher Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan loves–a guy who gets a ton of groundballs and plays to the defense’s strengths.
That said, he’s got a 4.65 ERA this year, and is nowhere [...]

A’s Notes: Buck, Chavez, Sheets and More!

Written by Joseph Lopez | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | MLB, Swingin' A's (Athletics)

With the A’s trailing the Rangers in the AL West by 8.5 games, the team could use all the help they can get in the second-half. The A’s had Brett Anderson back last night, and despite his sub-par performance, the team should be excited to have their young ace back in the rotation. Dallas Braden, who returned not too long ago himself, gets the start tonight against the White Sox. Braden, who beat the White Sox last week, will look to impress Ozzie Guillen, who called Braden’s last start ‘nothing special.’
In other news, the A’s have recently activated OF Travis [...]

Prado Has Fractured Pinky; DL Decision in Couple Days

Written by David Lee | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Tomahawk Talk (Braves)

Reported by the AJC, Martin Prado has a fractured pinky and the guess is 7-10 days. Bobby will let Prado sit a couple days before making the decision on whether to place him on the disabled list.
I would have no problem letting him rest on the bench and keeping him off the disabled list as long as Alex Gonzalez comes back healthy in the next day or two, of course assuming Prado would be able to return within a week or so. Omar Infante has proven worthy of filling a starting role for a couple weeks without the Braves missing a beat. [...]

Arbitrator gives Niemi $2.75 million

Written by Jeffrey Bartl | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Blackhawk Up (Blackhawks)

It’s decision time for GM Stan Bowman.
After hearing the case between the Blackhawks and goaltender  Antti Niemi,  the arbitrator ruled Saturday seemingly in favor of Niemi, granting the Finn $2.75 millionfor what would be a one-year contract. Bowman and the ‘Hawks now have 48 hours to accept the figure or walk away and allow Niemi to be an unrestricted free agent.
There’s also a possibility the ‘Hawks could sign the tender and trade Niemi, which may be the best for both sides. The Blackhawks have been rumored to be exploring the possibility of signing  Marty Turco  or  Jose Theodore,  with each of [...]

Rolle To Be Signed

Written by Josh Dhani | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Always Miller Time (Pacers), NBA

Magnum Rolle performed well for the Indiana Pacers during the team’s Summer League. As the 51st pick of the NBA Draft, Rolle was traded to the Pacers. He has a lot of high hopes. But many wonder if he will be under contract soon.
“He will be invited to training camp. I anticipate he will be signed before camp. We like how he played in the rookie camp and also what he showed in the Summer League. He is here in Indianapolis, working out on his own. There is a reasonable chance he will be with us when [...]

Giant Transactions and Tweets

Written by Andrew Ilnicki | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | G-MEN H.Q. (Giants)

The Giants waived two players yesterday – effectively bringing their total roster count to 78 out of a possible 80. LB Kenny Ingram and DE Ayanga Okpokowuruk were both cut to make room for rookie standouts DT Linval Joseph and DE Jason Pierre-Paul.  And just like clockwork, ESPN’s Adam Shefter tweeted moments ago:
New York must be getting ready for camp: Giants reached agreement with second-round pick Linval Joseph on a four-year deal.
It is believed first round pick DE Jason Pierre-Paul will be signed before camp tomorrow as well.
In related new, the injured rookie safety Chad Jones who was [...]
