Cantu trade the right move, any moves left?
Written by Michael Jong | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Marlin Maniac (Marlins)
A couple of days ago, the Marlins dealt Jorge Cantu away for a pair of minor leaguers, Evan Reed and Omar Poveda. I won’t pretend to know what these players are all about, but I’ll let prospect maven Bryan Smith of FanGraphs fill us in:
[Poveda] never had a particularly good fastball, so there has to be some concern that he’ll return to the mound without a heater to speak of. If so, it’s unlikely to project that he’d be able to carve out a big league career. But, he was a guy that had a feel for a change-up and [...]
O.K. Morning Report
Written by Brian Miller | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Phin Phanatic (Dolphins)
The Miami Dolphins have wrapped their morning practice and will be in the classroom until around 2 today. On the next page, you will find the morning Omar “O.K.” Kelly report. (I get tired of typing his name in every title).
Before we click over I thought you would like to know some knowledge on how the training camps work.
Players are actually bussed in by the team from the team hotel. Usually it’s up the road from the practice facility…about a mile. I know the name that is usually used but I don’t think the team would appreciate me broadcasting that [...]
New Orleans Saints: DON’T STOP BELIEVING
Written by Raymond Baio | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Who Dat Dish (Saints)
Like the title of the popular song by the 70-80’s band Journey, it seems that most if not all of the sports writers in this country have stopped believing.
It doesn’t surprise me that they have because no matter what the Saints have accomplished in past years they never got respect and maybe rightfully so since in all previous years the bottom always fell-out and they would finish the mediocre team that everyone said they were, but not this time.
It’s time the power rankings give us our due.
I don’t know what kind of neighborhoods that these so-called sports magazine writers or [...]
Cowboys Prized Rookie WR Sprains Ankle At Camp
Written by Andrew Ilnicki | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | G-MEN H.Q. (Giants)
According to multiple reports, Dez Bryant is reportedly going to be out for up to 6 weeks due to an ankle sprain suffered at the end of Fridays practice, effectively missing the entire preseason schedule. Via Player Press:
Bryant became entangled with a defender while trying to catch a pass near the end of Friday’s practice. When he got up and tried to walk, he grimaced in obvious pain, then sat back down on the turf and reached for his right ankle. Trainers ran out onto the field and checked on him and then had [...]
D’backs/Pirates Trade: Chris Snyder, Ryan Church, Bobby Crosby, and More
Written by Nathaniel Stoltz | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Baseball
Well, this is certainly strange.
The majority of July trades involve rebuilding teams sending veterans to contenders for prospects. But neither the Arizona Diamondbacks nor the Pittsburgh Pirates are anywhere near contention, and yet they made a rather extensive deal today.
In the five-player trade, Pittsburgh sent reliever D.J. Carrasco, outfielder Ryan Church, and infielder Bobby Crosby to Arizona for catcher Chris Snyder, minor league infielder Pedro Ciriaco, and cash.
Well, that’s sure a lot to swallow, and it’s tough to tell at first glance how this all adds up. I’ll break it all down after the jump.
The [...]
And…Pat White Returns
Written by Brian Miller | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Phin Phanatic (Dolphins)
The saga of Pat White is far from over. Yesterday it was reported that the back-up QB would miss the rest of the TC with a “serious” personal issue. Now, he has shown up at practice, been taken off the physically unable to perform list, and is back with his team.
It’s being reported around local mainstream media that the White saga if far from over and the fact that he is practicing with the team does not mean that he will stick it out, stay, or anything else.
Some believe that the Dolphins are trying to trade the QB, some think [...]
David Patten Retires
Written by jamie | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Musket Fire (New England Patriots), NFL
Wide receiver David Patten, a veteran from the Patriots’ Super Bowl years who recently re-signed with the team, has announced his retirement after 13 years of professional football. Patten said that physically he felt that he could still compete but was not 100% into it mentally, so he knew it was time to retire. Here’s some of what Patten had to day about why he retired:
“I was still able to go out and be competitive and operate at a high level, but I believe once you get to the point in your career where it’s multiple years — [...]
Ha, Ha… Damn: Roy Oswalt’s Phillies Debut
Written by Justin Klugh | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | That Balls Outta Here (Phillies)
Sure, its easy to abandon ship without putting up much of a fight because then you get to say “I TOLD YOU SO” if Oswalt is a bust. But that’s so cowardly I don’t know how you read that last sentence without putting an axe through your computer.
Denny Hamlin Talks About His “Disparaging Remarks”…With More Disparaging Remarks
Written by Ben Montedonico | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | NASCAR
You’ve gotta love Denny Hamlin. He tells it like it is.
Hamlin was recently announced as one of two drivers fined for making “disparaging remarks” about NASCAR. According to sources, Hamlin was fined on two separate occasions; one coming after the Michigan race, and the other coming after Chicagoland.
Hamlin was fined for making comments about phantom debris cautions, as well as potential changes to the Chase.
Now, put yourself in Hamlin’s shoes. You’ve been fined twice this season for speaking your mind, so what do you do next? Do you shake it off and publicly make amends with NASCAR? Do you not [...]
McCoy and Penn both sign contracts
Written by Kyle Phillippi | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | The Pewter Plank (Bucs)
Finally, every member of the Buccaneers’ roster will be at camp. It was reported earlier that starting left tackle Donald Penn had agreed to a new long-term deal, but now, the details of the deal are out publicly. Penn inked a 6 year, $43 million deal. The new deal will pay him around $7 million per year.
But that’s not all Tampa has done in terms of signing their guys. The Bucs and rookie defensive tackle, Gerald McCoy, have finally reached a five-year deal. The terms of the deal regarding money have not been announced yet.
With these two key players locked up, they can [...]

San Francisco Giants Trade Deadline Rumors
Written by Bryan | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Frisco Fastball (Giants)
I’ll be updating this page as the day goes along…so keep checking back for new rumors.
As of this morning, all is quiet – but that’s mostly just the calm before the storm. The Giants need a lefty out of the pen. They’ve been in on a variety of guys, most notably Scott Downs and Will Ohman, but haven’t finished any deals off just yet. CSN BayArea’s Mychael Urban reported last night that the Giants were in some serious talks attempting to finish off a deal, but nothing was reported after that. So, pull your huggies up folks – it’s about [...]
Qualls, Snyder Traded
Written by Scott Allen | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | MLB, Venom Strikes (DBacks)
The trading merry-go-round continues as we near the deadline at 1pm Arizona time. Here is what we know so far:
Chad Qualls is gone. He has been traded to the Tampa Rays. The hard part of getting rid of Qualls was his salary. Many teams were looking for the Dbacks to pay his salary. Tampa has agreed to pay his salary for the rest of the season. Personally I think he’s pitched worth a bag of peanuts. Maybe a change of scenery will do him well.
Chris Snyder is gone. He was traded after league approval, to the Pittsburgh Pirates. D.J. Carrasco, [...]
