The Kansas City Royals ended a five game losing skid in grand fashion on Friday night. His team behind by a score of 5-4 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Alex Gordon hit a three run homer into the right field bullpen off Orioles closer Alfredo Simon to win the game in come from behind walk-off fashion. Prior to coming through in the ninth, Alex had previously failed to deliver with runners in scoring position on three separate occasions. But all was forgiven as he was mobbed by teammates and cheered by a crowd of twenty one [...]

Buck Showalter will bring the Orioles back to prominence
Written by Ryne Gery | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Baseball
The summer of 2010 has been a lot of things in baseball. The Year of the Pitcher some would say. Others say it’s the Year of the Rookie because of the influx of young talent making an impact. The End of an Era is another hot theme.
Some of the biggest names in managing are calling it quits at the end of the season. Bobby Cox quietly announced 2010 would be his last before the season. Lou Piniella finally confirmed the rumors that he would retire during a frustrating season as the Cubs skipper. And Joe Torre is 70 years old. [...]

Pouncey Signed Sealed Delivered
Written by Chris | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Nice Pick, Cowher (Steelers), The Ebony Bird (Ravens)
Pittsburgh Steelers Director of Player Personnel Kevin Colbert is really earning his money. Hours after signing a five year extension himself, Colbert inked 2010 second rounder linebacker Jason Worilds to a four year deal. Yesterday, he brought in Dallas Cowboys reject Flozell Adams to shore up an offensive line in shambles. Adams signed a two year $7.5 million contract with no signing bonus and neither year is guaranteed which translates to “He was desperate to find a job.” The Hotel is going to man the right tackle spot left vacant due to the season ending injury to Willie Colon.

Dwight Howard’s Thoughts On The Hawks
Written by keithbox | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Soaring Down South (Hawks)
Jeff Shultz at the AJC took time out to interview Dwight Howard while he was in Atlanta this weekend. First of all, Dwight let it out that Josh Smith is getting married this weekend. Congratulations Josh Smith! Marriage is a wonderful thing and settling down has a way of taming the wild. I wish Josh all the best in his new family life and a renewed focus on his basketball game. Dwight will be Josh’s best man. Seeing how close these two are just makes it sting a little more than Atlanta missed out on getting the hometown star back [...]

Jhonny Peralta Hits Two Bombs in Tigers Win

Detroit 6, Boston 5 (box)
I can’t even remember the last time the Tigers won a road game, I just know it was sometime before the all-star break. Last night, the Tigers new third baseman belted a solo homer on the second pitch he saw. Talk about making a good first impression, huh?
Jhonny Peralta was not the impact bat the fans of the Tigers were pining over this month, not at all. When the trade was announced, fans were not thrilled. Those who didn’t like the trade hated it, either because of the prospect the Tigers gave up, or because [...]

Mailbag question: The running backs
Just curious about which running back most impresses all of the staff. Despite everyone thinking Shaw is the likeliest to start, I have not been impressed with his ability to cut back and find holes.

Thanks for the question.
If everybody at the running back position is healthy on September 4, and able to play, we like Vincent Smith the best.
He has good vision, super quickness, and is a tough runner. He can go to the outside, along with doing a reasonable good job of getting the [...]

Ball Clippings: Dropkick Mojo
Written by Brian Phair | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | BoSox Injection (Red Sox)
With the Sox playoff hopes dwindling by a thread, I thought this might be the perfect time to try and inject some energy into the remaining 2+ months of the year. The Dropkick Murphys have become the Red Sox band over the past several year’s and their music is featured all over the park, most notably when Jonathan Papelbon exits the bullpen for the mound. I’m Shipping Up to Boston blasts over the loudspeaker and fans everywhere know what that song stands for.
The song has a second meaning this time of year that connects to the 4pm MLB trade deadline. [...]

Written by Ryne Gery | July 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Redbird Rants (Cardinals)
Whitey Herzog will be honored prior to Saturday’s game against the Pirates. His No. 24 jersey will never be worn again in St. Louis. The retirement ceremony will be another highlight in a whirlwind summer that included his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame last Sunday.
The highlight of his short and sweet speech came at the end.
Every question was ‘what’s it feel like to be a Hall of Famer? Well I didn’t know. I said ‘I won’t know until July 25.’ Well now I can tell you what it feels like. Being elected to the National Baseball Hall [...]
