After sitting in a tie atop the division with the Rays for a record (this late in the season) eight consecutive days, the New York Yankees are in sole possession of first place in the AL East following a 9-3 shellacking of the A’s. The Yanks have the Blue Jays to thank as they beat the piss out of the Rays, 13-5.
The Yanks got to Oakland early with a bizarre first inning in which the team scored three runs on two hits with a walk, a hit by pitch, a GIDP with the bases loaded, two steals, an error and [...]

Francoeur on His Way to the Texas Rangers
Written by Adam Garnett | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Rising Apple (Mets)
According to multiple outlets, the Mets have traded Jeff Francoeur to the Texas Rangers for cash and utility infielder Joaquin Arias. Though Francoeur was a positive force in the locker room and a favorite with the New York media hoard, his offensive performance was downright wretched. Despite 11 HR and 534 RBIs on the ledger, Francoeur often looked clueless up at the dish this season. He had some serious cold streaks this season and clearly has no concept of how to work a count. The dude swings from his heels every time. I am guessing all of these negative traits [...]
Season’s Over: Tigers Drop Crucial Series Opener With Twins
Written by Matt Snyder | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Motor City Bengals (Tigers)
Minnesota 4, Detroit 3 (box)
Of course the season isn’t literally over, but this was one of those games that the ball club absolutely needed to win if they still had aspirations of winning the division. The Tigers fall to eleven back of the Twins, and the schedule math is now very very grim.
The Tigers’ offense looked promising early, but the fun would be short lived. A rare Minnesota error to lead off the game allowed Austin Jackson to reach base. Will Rhymes followed him by placing a nice bunt toward second base, and the Tigers had their first [...]
Ryan Ludwick deal not to blame for losing ways
Written by Ryne Gery | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Redbird Rants (Cardinals)
It is often said that we don’t realize how much something or someone matters until that thing is taken away — until it’s gone.
Since the Cards traded Ryan Ludwick to land Jake Westbrook at the trade deadline, Cards fans have admitted they miss Luddy. The outfielder gave St. Louis some great years and some much-needed pop in a weak lineup. It doesn’t help that since the team traded him, they have lost more than they’ve won and fallen far behind the Cincinnati Reds. Offense is a big part of the problem and Ludwick would certainly make a difference. He is [...]
Central Park: Brett Myers, Robbery, The Hawk, and Mike Quade
Written by Ryne Gery | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Redbird Rants (Cardinals)
A look around the rest of the NL Central this week focuses on some positive news about the Astros and Cubs despite tough seasons and some bad news for one Brewers star. Lately, it’s been all bad news for the Cards as they try to stay afloat in the pennant race. Check out some of the big stories as we head into September.
Houston Astros
J.A. Happ added to the Cards misery with a two-hit shutout last night. Happ came to Houston in the Oswalt deal with Philadelphia. He’s not the only former Phillies hurler to find success on this team. Brett [...]

Battle of the NFC East: Running Back
Written by Spence | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Redskins), NFL
Today we continue our annual Battle of the NFC East articles, comparing all four NFC East division rivals — the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins — against each other, position by position. I will rank the teams in order of strongest to weakest at each position and will also choose the best player in the division at each particular position. We will start on offense and proceed to defense over the course of this week. Evaluations will be based not only on the strength of starters, but also reserves and may be influenced by current [...]
Banged Up Bills Making Strides
Written by Brennan Cooper | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | BuffaLowdown (Bills)
Even though this offseason has been riddled with injuries, the Bills may not be in the worst of shape when it comes to week one of the regular season. It appears as though many of the walking wounded appear to be on the fast track toward making it back onto the field. Here is the latest news on a few of the preseason and camp injuries:
Fred Jackson: Freddy has returned to the practice field and shed his cast. It sounds to me that Coach Gailey feels that Fred will be ready to go in week one, but only on a [...]

Should the Pats Trade for Champ Bailey?
Written by jamie | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Musket Fire (New England Patriots), NFL, Predominantly Orange (Broncos)
The news that CB Leigh Bodden has been placed on season-ending IR can’t help but bring some trepidation when thinking about the success of New England’s young secondary. With Bodden down, the learning curve is much steeper and progress has to be made much quicker. As it stands right now, second-year man Darius Butler and rookie Devin McCourty will be starting, and while they have big potential, they also have some big steps to take to be a successful tandem. I mentioned in my last post that trading for a veteran corner may be on the Pats’ “To-Do” list to [...]
No One is Sitting
Written by Tim Grimes | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Blog Red Machine (Reds)
It is the top of the 8th inning and the Reds are winning 8-3. And…..here comes Aroldis Chapman making his major league debut. The crowd goes crazy. And, not a soul was sitting during his 1.2.3. inning. He struck out the first batter he faced with two pitches over a hundred mph and two pitches that were nasty 86 mph sliders. The next two batters grounded out but the guy still got a standing ovation.
There has never been a Red making his debut with this much hype. When Jay Bruce debuted a couple [...]
Khabibulin Sentenced To 30 Days
Written by Jeffrey Chapman | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Oil on Whyte (Oilers)
As of right now, he’ll be here for camp.
-Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini, addressing the media after the sentencing of Nikolai Khabibulin’s “extreme DUI” sentence.
Finally, we can put it to rest. Right?
Not so fast.
I’ve been asked my thoughts on how the Khabibulin saga will turn out, and I’ve always said that I’d just like it to be over.
Thought I’d get my wish today.
Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin was sentenced today for his ‘extreme DWI’ conviction, and he was expectedly sentenced to thirty days in Maricopa County’s Tent City. “30 days” sounds pretty cut and dry to you and me, [...]
Aisle 5: Cereal, Peanut Butter, Matt Leinart
Written by Scott Allen | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Raising Zona (Cardinals)
If you are an NFL team not currently named the Arizona Cardinals, good news for you! Cards quarterback Matt Leinart is for sale! According to reports , the current Cards quarterback is being shopped by your Cardinals. From the sounds of it, not too many of you are disappointed by that either.
It’s not really a surprise though, is it? Derek Anderson is starting against the Washington Redskins on Thursday. After practice yesterday, Leinart criticized the way his demotion this past Saturday was handled. Now, Leinart and coach Ken Whisenhunt apparently cleared the air, however it may have been a case [...]
Clearing Up the Call Up Picture
Written by Michael Engel | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Kings of Kauffman (Royals), MLB
It looks like the batch of September call ups may be pretty small when rosters expand tomorrow. The unofficial word for now is that Gil Meche, Luke May and Josh Fields will be the three players who join the Royals in Kansas City for tomorrow’s series finale.
Noticeably absent from that list is Texas League Player of the Year Mike Moustakas.
Dayton Moore mentioned that some players from Northwest Arkansas and Omaha may be called up once their seasons end, but for now, Meche and Fields will be activated from the 60 day DL (no corresponding move [...]
