Seahawks Trade Josh Wilson to Baltimore

Written by Shaun Dolence | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | 12th Man Rising (Seahawks), The Ebony Bird (Ravens)

More breaking news from today: the Seahawks have traded cornerback Josh Wilson to the Baltimore Ravens for an undisclosed pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
Wilson has started 24 games for the Seahawks since they selected him in the second round of the 2007 draft. Since Seattle traded its 2007 first-round pick to New England for Deion Branch, Wilson was the first player the Seahawks selected that year.
In three seasons, Wilson has recorded 130 tackles, 2 sacks, and 6 interceptions. Despite his lack of size – he is only 5-feet-9 and 192 pounds – Wilson developed into one of Seattle’s only [...]

Marshall University subject of lawsuit

Written by Jim | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Hail WV (West Virginia)

Well, this certainly takes the lack of safety in Huntington to a new level… according to USA Today [link], former Houston Cougars WR Patrick Edwards has sued Marshall University and Conference USA for an injury he received in 2008, accusing MU and CUSA of maintaining an unsafe playing field.
Edwards was running full speed for a long pass when his right shin crashed into the cart just beyond the end zone. Edwards suffered a compound fracture and a rod was inserted in his lower right leg during surgery the next day in Huntington.
The lawsuit filed Tuesday in Kanawha [...]

Happy Chip Ganassi Day!

Written by Ben Montedonico | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | NASCAR

The banks are closed and the kids have a day off from school. It’s Chip Ganassi Day in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Alright, so I’m exaggerating. The banks are open in Pittsburgh(those that are still around, anyway) and the kids had to go to school. But it really is Chip Ganassi Day.
The NASCAR team owner earned the honor today as the Pittsburgh City Council proclaimed that today be named for Ganassi, in light of his historical NASCAR accomplishments this year. Ganassi became the first car owner to win racing’s “triple crown”, taking NASCAR’s Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400, along with Indycar’s Indianapolis 500.
Happy [...]

Call-Ups: Baltimore Orioles, Chris Tillman and Troy Patton

Written by Wally Fish | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Baseball, MLB

Once again it is collaborative post time here on Call to the Pen. This month’s topic is September call-ups. To get the ball rolling, I posed the following question to each of our Lead Writers, “Which player do you want your team to call-up in September and why?” It is a simple question but I think you will find the responses to be very diverse.
Taking the path less traveled this month, I decided to post each team’s write-up individually instead of grouping them by league or division as we have done in the past.
Originally I planned to chime in [...]

The Big Fat Cut Breakdown: New Orleans Saints Move To 75

Written by Keith Null | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Who Dat Dish (Saints)

The first major roster cuts loom for all NFL franchises today as teams must get to the 75 player maximum requirement by 4:00 PM, the Saints are underway in doing just that.
For the Saints that means parting ways with promising young talent and veteran players alike — Darren Sharper and Clint Ingram are the biggest fish perhaps on the proverbial chopping block.
Both veteran players underwent knee surgery this off-season and so far have been unable to practice with the team to date.
Do you keep them, put them on the PUP list or place them on injured reserve?
That’s the question for the Saints [...]

Nix on DL; Volquez to Dayton

Written by Steve Engbloom | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Blog Red Machine (Reds)

Two moves had to be made to make room for Aaron Harang and Aroldis Chapman. Outfielder Laynce Nix was placed on the DL due to his ankle and Edinson Volquez was optioned to Dayton to work on mechanics. Volquez will start tomorrow night for the Dragons. All was first confirmed by John Fay on Twitter and then on his blog.
The Nix move was not a surprise at all, but the Volquez move caught me a bit off guard. Nix hasn’t been able to do much of anything since he re-aggravated the ankle in San Fran. Volquez going to Dayton did [...]

College Football Darkhorse: Georgia Bulldogs

Written by Justin Malaise | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | We're Bucked (Bucks)

This feels like an odd year.  Alabama is the defending National Champion, with a returning Heisman trophy winner, but I have to admit I am not “feeling Bama”.  Be it the quarterback or the significant losses on defense, or just the natural letdown after being the national champion.  I do not see Alabama getting to the title game.
One team that is not under the radar, or will not be in a week or two is Oklahoma.  I think this year’s title game will be Oklahoma-Georgia.  Oklahoma makes sense and may even become a chic pick by the time the season [...]
