This feels like an odd year. Alabama is the defending National Champion, with a returning Heisman trophy winner, but I have to admit I am not “feeling Bama”. Be it the quarterback or the significant losses on defense, or just the natural letdown after being the national champion. I do not see Alabama getting to the title game.
One team that is not under the radar, or will not be in a week or two is Oklahoma. I think this year’s title game will be Oklahoma-Georgia. Oklahoma makes sense and may even become a chic pick by the time the season [...]

5 Players The Chiefs Can’t Live Without
Written by Patrick Allen | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Arrowhead Addict (Chiefs)
There has been some talk around ESPN.com and the local Kansas City airwaves recently about indispensable players. Most of these conversations have centered around trying to pick one player but in football, as we saw with Jared Allen, one player can’t do own.
OK, maybe Manning or Brady can but even those guys need someone to catch the ball.
This year, for the first time in a long time, it seems like the Chiefs may actually have more than one guy that they that is going to make plays for them.
Here is my list of 5 players the Chiefs can’t live without.
#1 [...]
Aaron Johnson signs with the Preds
Written by Amanda DiPaolo | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Predlines (Predators)
In what could potentially be seen as a surprise move, this afternoon the Predators announced that defenseman Aaron Johnson has signed a one year, two-way deal Nashville. The 27-year old Nova Scotia native split last season between Calgary and Edmonton, playing 41 games in the NHL. If Johnson plays for the Preds, his contract is worth $550, 000, otherwise he;ll get $105, 000 at the AHL level in Milwaukee.

Despite his relative youth, Johnson has already made his way around the league. In addition to playing with the Flames and Oilers, Johnson spent time with Chicago, the Islanders and [...]
Opportunity, Thy Name is Travis Zajac!
Written by Aric McFall | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Fire that Cannon (Blue Jackets), NHL
Rumors abound that NJ is close to signing Ilya Kovalchuck, making some players expendable in the very near future.
Defenseman Bryce Salvador and center Dainius Zubrus are mentioned as likely candidates to be traded, but seeing as they are overpaid it is unlikely many teams will take them on.
Travis Zajac has also been mentioned as a possible trade option, and if this is true, I think the Jackets should pull the trigger now. Plain and simple, opportunities for quality centers do not come along every day… maybe once a season.
Zajac is 6′3″, 200 lbs. He has averaged 20 goals and 40 [...]
Does Ted Lilly Make Sense for the Mariners?
Written by Griffin Cooper | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | SoDo Mojo (Mariners)
It’s inevitable. As baseball fans, we naturally love to fantasize about our team of choice acquiring certain players, and because of that, the suggestions are always going to start flooding the internet well before the winter arrives. This is especially true for fans of teams that aren’t in contention, like the Mariners. And can you really blame us? Rosterbation doesn’t really get us anywhere, but at least it stimulates the baseball portions of our mind when actually watching the team play won’t.
That being said, one of the things I’ve started to hear recently is that the Mariners should go after [...]
Manny Delcarmen Traded to Rockies
Written by Brian Phair | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | BoSox Injection (Red Sox)
In the last day to make waiver wire trades, the Sox have traded Hyde Park native Manny Delcarmen to the Colorado Rockies for cash and a young A prospect, RHP Chris Balcom-Miller. Balcom-Miller was drafted in the 6th round of the 2009 draft and will report to the A Greenville Drive. According to Alex Speier of WEEI.com, Balcom-Miller has a 177:29 career strikeout-to-walk rate in the minors. It was clear Tito no longer had faith in Delcarmen and was relying more on Scott Atchison recently, so it was a matter of time until a move was made. More information to [...]
Seahawks and Leroy Hill Restructure Contract
Written by Shaun Dolence | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | 12th Man Rising (Seahawks)
The Seahawks have not released Leroy Hill, but they did restructure his contract.
The new contract will reportedly lower Hill’s 2010 salary from $6 million to $2.125 million and remove the remaining four years. With the new deal, Leroy Hill will be a free agent after the season.
For those of you hoping the Seahawks would dump Hill during the offseason, this could be the next best thing.
The restructured deal will give Hill an opportunity to prove his worth both on and off the field. The Seahawks no longer have a long-term commitment with the troubled linebacker.
Linebacker has been a position of strength [...]

Backup QB Rhett Bomar Interview
Written by Andrew Ilnicki | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | G-MEN H.Q. (Giants)
Q: How’s it been out there so far?
A: I’ve been comfortable, that’s been my goal the whole time. I can only control what I can control. It’s the coaches’ decision, and everything like that. I just try to go out there and play to the best of my ability, and hopefully everything works out. It’s an opportunity I have to go out there Thursday and show them that I’m capable to do that and they can trust me. That’s my goal to do that.
Q: What makes you think this job is yours to win [...]

Chris Cook Will Miss Season Opener With Torn Meniscus
Written by Dan Zinski | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | The Viking Age (Vikings)
Chris Cook made a big impression in his first start as an NFL corner Saturday night vs. the Seahawks. Unfortunately, Cook had to leave the game prematurely after suffering a knee injury.
Afterward, the rookie tried to downplay the severity of the injury. Now we all know the truth: Cook has a torn meniscus which will keep him out of next Thursday’s season opener against the Saints.
Veteran Lito Sheppard is expected to start in Cook’s place. The Vikings are now thin at corner with this injury and last week’s trade of Benny Sapp, so look for them to possibly pick someone [...]
Talib suspended one game
Written by Kyle Phillippi | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | The Pewter Plank (Bucs)
Bad news strikes Tampa Bay once again, this time it comes in the form of starting cornerback Aqib Talib facing a one game suspension issued by the NFL. The suspension is for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy.
The decision to suspend the former first round pick stems from Talib’s arrest last year after he allegedly hit a cab driver. The Kansas alum entered a diversion program that included anger management classes.
Luckily, the Bucs are facing the Cleveland Browns Week One, a team that isn’t much of a threat through the air. However, his absence still hurts the Bucs’ defense all around, and [...]

Farewell to Lisa Hillary
Written by Ben Sumner | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Capitals Outsider (Capitals)
It’s a sad day for Caps fans who enjoy the coverage as much as they do the game. CSN reporter Lisa Hillary is leaving for a gig in Philly. D.C. Sports Bog and On Frozen Blog (who had this story last week) have the details, but we here at Capitals Outsider, who spent some time with Lisa outside the interview scrum around Alex Ovechkin in the Caps’ locker room, will remember her as a talented journalist who made it a delight to watch the postgame interviews. Capitals Outsider wishes her well with the Flyers.
We’ll now play our favorite Lisa Hillary [...]
