Rudy Fernandez speaks (kind of)

Written by SJ | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Rip City Project (Blazers)

Finally, something resembling an updated in the developing telenovela known as the Rudy Fernandez saga (I still don’t have a catchy Spanish name for it) as HoopsHype has a link to an interview Fernandez did with Spanish newspaper El Periodico. The entire interview, in Spanish, can be found here (I really wish I had paid more attention to Spanish class in 8th grade, *groan*). Anyways, HoopsHype has a translation of a key part and here’s what they got from it:
The new Blazers GM Rich Cho has confirmed there’s no chance for you to return to Europe. What do you think [...]

Joe Paterno Press Conference Quick Hits

Written by Ben | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Victory Bell Rings (Penn State)

At some point in the day this word….here…will be a link to the full transcript of today’s press conference but until then we’ve got some quick hits for you. That’s the most important part anyway.

2010 Capitans are Brett Brackett and Olli Ogbu–Brackett is a good locker-room player, while he doesn’t get much if any media attention he is the sort of player you want on your team.
Chaz Powell has been moved back to offense–This move only surprising because he was listed as a starting cornerback just 3 days ago on the newest depth chart. He however was mostly in that [...]

Broncos Links

Written by Kim Constantinesco | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | NFL, Predominantly Orange (Broncos)

Broncos:

A tougher than normal decision for Josh McDaniels regarding defensive backs.
A word about Syd’Quan Thompson – the playmaker.
Broncos play the big linebackers  in the nickel and dime making roster cut downs unique.
Justin Fargas had a short stay in Denver.
Ryan Harris and Eric Decker will feel at home on Thursday.
John Elway and Tim Tebow are now on the same trading card.
Looking at the film of a Tebow led offense.
Kyle Orton is ranked middle of the pack in John Clayton’s rankings for starting NFL QBs.

AFC West:

Matt Cassel is ranked well behind Kyle Orton in Clayton’s QB rankings.
The Raiders are having [...]

Time is Now or Never for Darren McFadden

Written by Chris Shellcroft | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Just Blog Baby (Raiders)

Darren McFadden will most likely never be a true NFL running back.
He’s not the guy you’re going to see carrying the rock 25 times a game. He’s not the type of player capable of playing every down in the backfield.
After two years of pro ball, Run-DMC has just one 100-yard game to his name and has found his name on the injured list more often than he’s found the end zone.
Not unlike JaMarcus Russell one year ago, McFadden’s third year will be his make or break moment. Just like Russell, McFadden was handed the starting job in camp and just [...]

Mark Ingram Listed As Week-To-Week

Written by Ben | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Victory Bell Rings (Penn State)

In a statement released by the Alabama football program today Mark Ingram will be listed as week-to-week after having an arthroscopic procedure Tuesday morning. Ingram suffered a knee injury late in Monday’s practice, and has been ruled out for Saturday night’s season opener against San Jose State. With Ingram sidelined, No. 1 Alabama will rely on Trent Richardson, who ran 145 times for 751 yards with eight touchdowns in 2009.
Take that as you will. Richardson is no Ingram, but many Alabama sources claim that Richardson has the making of a back as good, if not better than Ingram so Penn [...]

Chiefs Links: Chiefs A Preseason Winner

Written by Patrick Allen | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Arrowhead Addict (Chiefs)

Clipped from: sportsillustrated.cnn.com (share this clip)

And this isn’t an all-on-Larry Johnson’s-shoulders type of ground game. Jamaal Charles, Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster all can move the chains in different ways, and the team’s leading rusher this preseason is third-year power back Jackie Battle, a 238-pounder who knows how to lower his head but who has also ripped off a pair of 21-yard gallops. Kansas City ran the ball 36 times for 168 yards against Philadelphia on Friday night, throwing only 28 passes for 128 yards.
For now, it sounds like the offensive emphasis in Kansas City is clear. The Chiefs are [...]

Central Division Shakedown

Written by Amanda DiPaolo | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Predlines (Predators)

Every Tuesday, Predlines will be bringing you the latest news and analysis from the Central Division. Because the Predators success largely depends on the failures of our divisional opponents, we need to track their every move throughout the regular, post and off season. If we’ve left something of note out, contact us at predlines@gmail.com.
This week was particular slow around the league in terms of hockey news. But it appears that signings are going to be fast and furious heading into training camp 17 days from now. As such, hopefully the Central Division Shakedown will heat up.
Chicago Blackhawks
Since last Tuesday’s news [...]

Ross Tucker of SI previews the NFC East

Written by Spence | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Redskins), NFL

Ross Tucker of Sports Illustrated previews the entire NFC East here and he likes the Redskins a lot more than many NFL observers.
What the Redskins do best: Play defense.
The Redskins have very quietly had one of the better defenses in the NFL over the past few years and they expect to build upon that as they switch to a 3-4 base front under new defensive coordinator Jim Haslett. Haslett believes the Redskins have the personnel, especially in prototypical pass-rushing outside linebackers Brian Orakpo andAndre Carter, to successfully make this transition. With those two getting after the quarterback and veteran linebacker London Fletcher leading [...]

With the countdown to the final cut down looming, the Raiders parted ways with four players yesterday.
Veteran tight end Tony Stewart, who lost his place on the depth chart to second year TE Brandon Myers, was the biggest name amongst the cuts made. In…

Marcin Gortat & Poland Fail To Qualify For EuroBasket 2011

Written by Andrew Melnick | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Howard the Dunk (Magic)

Marcin Gortat and is Polish National team failed to qualify for EuroBasket 2011.
Josh Cohen of OrlandoMagic.com has been following Gortat’s performance throughout the competition.
Marcin Gortat may not care that he was, by and large, one of the best, most dominant players during EuroBasket qualifying action in August. The Polish Machine averaged 18 points, nearly nine rebounds and more than two blocks per game for his country.
But, Gortat understands that his individual achievements are very immaterial after learning Poland did not qualify for EuroBasket 2011.
Poland suffered a devastating 70-67 defeat to Belgium on Sunday – allowing Georgia to eclipse the Poles [...]

2012 Recruiting: Chris Wormley — Toledo Whitmer
GBMWolverine was on hand to watch Chris Wormley, who plays for Toledo Whitmer, a Division One program, play against Division Three opponent Tiffin Columbian Friday night.
Toledo Whitmer has become one of the better programs in the Northwest Ohio area under Coach Palka. Here is a partial list of the talented players who have recently played for Whitmer: Kevin Koger (Michigan), Kenny Hayes (Ohio State), Joe Missler (Toledo), B.J. Barre (Ohio State), and Donnie Dottei (Ashland).
Coach Palka has really built a solid program, especially considering he has to try to match [...]

A’s Missing Some CarGo?

Written by Joseph Lopez | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Swingin' A's (Athletics)

After the conclusion of the 2008 season, in which the A’s failed to reach the .500 mark, Billy Beane and Co. decided to trade away for Colorado’s prized slugger Matt Holliday. In that deal with Colorado, the A’s sent pitchers Huston Street, Greg Smith and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. As most of you already know, the Holliday deal was a total flop.
In 93 games with Oakland, Holliday hit .286/.378/.454 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs before getting shipped to the St. Louis Cardinals. And after being traded, Holliday hit .353/.419/.604 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs. In return, the [...]
