My Chief Concerns: Self Preservation Tactic Of A True Homer

Written by jeremyriversideca | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Arrowhead Addict (Chiefs)

On the eve of the new season I must admit that I feel different.  Usually, I am rather overjoyed, excited, and full of hope as the new season begins.  I am a homer, through and through.  In all honesty it is that way every single year, but not this year.
This year I have reservations.  It stems from the fact that the last few years have been emotionally draining for me.  As some of you know, last year, while in the deepest darkest throes of losing, I still kept my cool, still kept my optimism, but it was very, very difficult.  [...]

Saints LB Jonathan Vilma’s Injury Not A Concern

Written by Keith Null | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Bolt Beat (Chargers), Who Dat Dish (Saints)

“I’m not letting ANYTHING stop me from showing up to the party Sept 9! believe that!!” — Vilma tweeted.
After injuring his groin in the second quarter of the Saints preseason win over the San Diego Chargers last Saturday Saints fans held their breath in anticipation of the severity of the injury to the unheralded captain of the defense — Jonathan Vilma.
The prognosis: very good.
Vilma was coming through the right side of the Chargers offensive line on a blitz and seemed primed for the sack when he was bent back awkwardly by the left tackle essentially causing the injury to the [...]

ESPN Continues Their Bills Bashing

Written by P. Miller | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | BuffaLowdown (Bills)

Of course going into the season, every NFL team starts 0-0, but that doesn’t stop the ‘experts’ including ESPN in drilling their own opinions about how teams and players will play this season.
It first started this morning on Sportscenter where the Monday Night Football crew sat around and predicted how many games each team in the AFC East will win.
When it came time to talk about the Bills, the questions was: Will the Buffalo Bills win more or less than five games?
Ron Jaworski answer was less because “Chan Gailey needs a little bit of time to get his [...]

My Bible Finally Arrived!

Written by Frank Rekas | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | The Rat Trick (Panthers)

Not to be sacrilegious or anything like that , but when I came home from work Monday evening (in my sleekly delicious new car car), I opened the mailbox to see what had arrived.  Anticipation for someone my age is kinda like having the “little boy” still inside of us that we never out grow.  Thankfully!  As I reached inside to pull out the assortment of junk, bills and Chinese take out menu’s, a very wide smile came across my face.  It’s here!  A simple fist pump may have been seen by any neighbor that was watching.  Everyone has a Mrs. Kravitz [...]

Cody Ross Wins Game…For Rockies

Written by Bryan | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Frisco Fastball (Giants)

Hilarious. Simply, hilarious.
Venture to any San Francisco Giants message board, forum, blog – what have you – and you’ll find venom spewed at the mere mention of Jose Guillen, especially after his two run drop in the outfield last week. And that drop was simply awful. It should have been caught, simple as that. In fairness to him, it was clearly windy (as Freddy Sanchez struggled with a similar pop-up the next batter), but it was a play that needed to be made. So, alas, Guillen was the scapegoat. I’m not sure he was all that deserving, considering Barry Zito [...]

I think it’s safe to assume Tex’ thumb is fine

Written by Andrew Corselli | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Yanks Go Yard (Yankees)

The Yanks routed the A’s 11-5 on Monday in the opener of a four-game set, kicking off the team’s longest homestand of the season (10 games).
In doing so, the Yanks’ 3-4-5 hitters (Tex, Cano and Swish Dog) went 9-for-11 with two homers, three doubles, seven RBI and seven runs scored. The team duffed Buster Olney’s Cy Young pick, Trevor Cahill, up for a season-high eight runs on nine hits in four-plus innings of work.
Fun facts:

Trevor Cahill’s ERA against the Yankees this year: 12.60. Trevor Cahill’s ERA against all other opponents this year: 2.17.
Starter Dustin Moseley went 4 1/3 innings and [...]

Chiefs Release WR Lance Long

Written by Patrick Allen | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Arrowhead Addict (Chiefs)

Today marks the deadline for teams to cut their rosters down to 75 players. The Chiefs released 4 players on Sunday and still needed to cut one more player to reach 75.
The player is Lance Long.
The release of Long is a tribute to how far the Chiefs receivers have come since 2009. Long was pulled off the scrap heap and after an impressive debut with Kansas City, became a non-factor the longer he was around. Long caught 20 passes for 178 yards for the Chiefs after being activated from the team’s practice squad in October.
The Chiefs still have Bowe, Chambers, McCluster, Copper, [...]

Sac Bee Says Kings Want In On Carmelo Anthony

Written by Bryan | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | A Royal Pain (Kings)

According to Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee, the Kings are going to be heavy players for Carmelo Anthony, assuming the Nuggets decide to move their star forward. Voisin doesn’t really point to any specifics as to why this could happen, other than the well known fact of the Maloof family wanting a “star”, but she seems very confident the Kings will make an all out push for the 26 year old, three time All-Star:
If and when the Denver Nuggets commit to a sign-and-trade for Carmelo Anthony, the Kings will thrust themselves into the conversation. Count on it.
That [...]

Reds Go As Bruce Goes

Written by Steve Engbloom | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Blog Red Machine (Reds)

Jay Bruce started the scoring and ended the scoring last evening. He was again inserted in the leadoff spot for manager Dusty Baker. His first at-bat provided his third career leadoff home run and staked the Reds to a 1-0 lead. Opposite field, no less and Bruce’s first opposite field homer of the season. On Bruce’s last at-bat, he stoked a single into right field scoring Brandon Phillips and leading the Reds to an 10-inning, 5-4 win.
It wasn’t a particularly pretty game either. Three base running blunders, one of which Bruce committed one himself. A poor attempt at a bunt [...]

Never Too Late to Tinker

Written by Eugene Markman | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Broad Street Buzz (Flyers), NHL

I know the Flyers are cash strapped and there’s no cap space to sign anyone (not that there’s anyone out there worth signing).  That doesn’t rule out the opportunity for trades, however. As you should know, I write once a week for our NHL site, Too Many Men on the Site. My latest feature was about Bobby Ryan, of the Anaheim Ducks. There were whispers of a trade that would bring him to Phillyearlier this summer, but I haven’t heard anything in a few months.  As we know, hockey features significantly more trades than the other major sports, and it [...]

Injury updates

Written by Matt Staton | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | The Pewter Plank (Bucs)

The Buccaneers have had a short week before they travel to Houston for their final preseason game against the Texans. Here are the most recent updates on the Buccaneers injuries.
Josh Freeman has finally had the cast removed from his fractured thumb and has been doing some light throwing with the training staff. This is very encouraging news for the Bucs as the regular season draws closer. Coach Morris has said Freeman is on schedule, which means he should be ready to play by week one.
Guard Davin Joseph will be out for this game after suffering a hip flexor [...]

Iced Up Youngsters: Bobby Ryan

Written by Eugene Markman | August 31, 2010 | Comments Off | NHL, Too Many Men On The Site (NHL)

Bobby Ryan brings some old school toughness out to the West Coast and the Anaheim Ducks. He’s not a thug though, as he can definitely put the biscuit in the basket.

Career Stats (Game – Goals – Assists)

2007-2008: 23 – 5 -5

2008-2009: 64 – 31 – 26

2009-2010: 81 – 35 – 29

He’s not exactly a top notch playmaker, but you can rely on him to score some big goals.  In his lone playoff appearance, he chipped in 5 goals and 2 assists in 13 games.
Profile:  Ryan had a pretty accomplished resume before he hit the NHL.  In 2006, the Jersey boy [...]
