A’s Review: Ryan Sweeney

Written by Joseph Lopez | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Swingin' A's (Athletics)

Before reading on about Ryan Sweeney’s performance for the 2010 season, please take a look back at my off-season preview piece about Sweeney.
The A’s traded away fan-favorite Nick Swisher back in 2007, and while it may seem like an eternity, I must say that I’ve gotten over the whole Swisher-to-the-White Sox deal. In return for “Swish,” as he was so famously known in Oakland, the A’s received pitcher Gio Gonzalez, and outfielder Ryan Sweeney. Gonzalez, who has matured quite nicely this season in Oakland’s starting rotation, is one reason why I don’t think too much about the Swisher deal anymore. [...]

Various Angles for Washington Week

Written by Alejandro Madrid | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Reign of Troy (USC)

ESPN Pac-10 blogger Ted Miller provides a few tidbits to get us through the week:
Will the real Jake Locker please step up: Locker never asked to he hyped for a Heisman Trophy or announced as the top quarterback on the NFL radar, but we media folks put him on that pedestal and he’s fallen short of our predictions. So far. People who ask, “What has Locker done?” haven’t been paying attention. He’s done a lot while surrounded by a little (no college QB in the nation can produce as spectacular a highlight tape as Locker). But previous suggestions of tremendous [...]

Chiefs Links: Whitlock

Written by Patrick Allen | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Arrowhead Addict (Chiefs)

I need to acknowledge that my hometown Kansas City Chiefs are better than I anticipated. However, they still have major problems that can’t be covered by general manager Scott Pioli manipulating the local and national media.
Quarterback Matt Cassel is horrible. Rookie safety Eric Berry is off to a terrible start. Second-year defensive lineman Tyson Jackson’s absence has been a blessing to the defense.
If you’re scoring at home: Pioli’s handpicked QB and his two first-round picks are looking like busts.

Predict Bears-Giants Score, Win a Free Copy of “Da Bears”

Written by Boomer | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Bear Goggles (Bears)

It’s time to dig into the prize closet for the first time this season.  I know, I’ve been slacking!
The BGO team recently hijacked a truck carrying a bunch of copies of “Da Bears” by Steve Delsohn and we’re looking to move ‘em quick.  Actually, we were lucky enough to get a few extra copies from the publisher to share with Bear Goggles On fans, but the hijacking story sounds better.  It’s a great book – check out City’s review here.  It’s available in stores now or you can try to win a copy right here.
Rules are simple – Predict the [...]

Bears @ Giants Breakdown

Written by Andrew Ilnicki | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | G-MEN H.Q. (Giants)

Based on the pure breakdown from the NFL’s game page there are few crucial things that can be deduced from the Bears @ Giants matchup to take place Sunday night:

Firstly, the offensive breakdowns of these teams are fairly balanced. If you could give one edge to one team, it would be that the Giants running game has outpaced the Bears by 40 yards over the last 3 games.  The other statistics sort of end up in a wash — the Bears slightly average more points per game, the Giants have slightly more total yards and time of possession.  Really, the [...]

Changes at The Pewter Plank

Written by Patrik Nohe | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | The Pewter Plank (Bucs)

Over the past week and a half you may have noticed that this site is under new management, so to speak. We’re bringing on new staff and revising the way we do things here at The Pewter Plank. For starters, you will see plenty of new content added on a regular basis, that’s literally the least we can do in improving our coverage of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Also, please follow us on Twitter. We will post links to new stories, post breaking news and re-tweet messages from the Bucs and Buccaneers’ players on our feed. Increasingly, Twitter is changing the [...]

Our Deepest Fear is Not that We Are Inadequate (Part 10)

Written by Cody Norman | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Right Down Euclid (Cavs)

It’s time to focus our attention on what we do have.  And somewhere, buried under all of that distaste for our former King, there’s a Cavalier Fanatic that believes this team can still compete this season.  I’m not claiming that we have what it takes to win a championship right now because, as optimistic as I am, I don’t even believe that.  But the Cavs have some very steady pieces that, if they work together, could finish the regular season in the top eight in the Eastern Conference.  (For those of you that don’t follow me, that means they’ll make [...]

Does Andre Johnson Fear Nnamdi Asomugha?

Written by Chris Shellcroft | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Just Blog Baby (Raiders)

Last Sunday the Oakland Raiders put the rest of the league on high alert as Nnamdi Asomugha was taken off the leash and allowed to shadow Larry Fitzgerald for most of the game. This coming Sunday Andre Johnson is slated to be the next in line to get an afternoon filled with frustration. However, the All-Pro receiver is going to be a game-time decision due to a high-ankle sprain.
Maybe Johnson is getting cold feet after seeing how Nnamdi harassed Fitzgerald like Mel Gibson does Ukrainian pianists. Fitzgerald managed just one catch on Nnamdi and two catches overall during the contest.
The [...]

2010-11 Indiana Pacers Season Preview

Written by Josh Dhani | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Always Miller Time (Pacers), NBA

The Indiana Pacers will enter this season with a lot of high hopes now. This is the season where it’s time go to business. No more lottery picks, no more suffering. It’s time for some real good things to happen for the basketball state of Indiana. And it happens now. No more excuses. The Pacers need to get it together for this year.
Here is the 2010-11 Indiana Pacers season preview.
Season Recap
Last season was a big disappointment. I predicted the Pacers to finish somewhere around the seventh or eighth seed and make the playoffs. However, the came nowhere near that, struggling [...]

A’s Review: Ben Sheets

Written by Joseph Lopez | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Swingin' A's (Athletics)

Heading into this season, many figured that the A’s primary strength was going to be their  starting pitching. The A’s rotation at the beginning of the season included pitchers Ben Sheets, Justin Duchscherer, Dallas Braden, Brett Anderson and Gio Gonzalez. Ben Sheets, who signed with the team during the off-season for $10 million, was supposed to be the team’s ace, but the deal never panned out according to plan.
The A’s took a gamble on Sheets, and lost miserably. A’s GM/VP Billy Beane also took a ton of heat as well, as many baseball analysts criticized the deal. In return for [...]

Ovechkin more popular than Sid

Written by PennSkinsFan | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Capitals)

Don’t take it from us.  Take it from Hockey’s prospects, via Dan Steinberg.  This from Gare Joyce, co-author of Ovechkin’s unauthorizeded book.
Joyce:It’s funny, though. I look through the questionnaires filled out by the top prospects in last year’s draft, and in one of the goofier questions, you’re asked to name your favorite NHL player. Ovechkins outnumbered Crosbys, 2-1. Taylor hall’s favorite player? Alexander Ovechkin. It goes right down the line like that. I guess he has far more support and interest the deeper you get into the hockey community, which sort of explains why he wins the Ted Lindsay Award [...]

Leaving Los Angeles: Lakers Embark on Euro Trip

Written by Chris Shellcroft | September 30, 2010 | Comments Off | Lake Show Life (Lakers)

For the first time since 1991 the Los Angeles Lakers will play a friendly game of hoops outside of North America. Today the team will make a company move to London where they’ll open the preseason against the Minnesota Timberwolves then will trek down to Spain where Barcelona FC awaits.
Phil Jackson isn’t exactly ecstatic about his team’s camp routine being interrupted by the European excursion.
”This training camp is kind of a bust, as we call it. We don’t anticipate that the first two weeks we’re going to gain any ground. It’s our turn to go [to Europe] and we’ll make [...]
