Live Microphone: Mike Shanahan on Brandon Banks

Written by PennSkinsFan | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Redskins)

Mike Shanahan gave high praise, rightfully so, to Redskins special teams returner Brandon Banks.  This comes to us via Mike Jones from TBD.
“If you weren’t impressed with him (Brandon Banks) then you don’t enjoy foot…

Hot or Not: Talladega

Written by Ben Montedonico | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | NASCAR

The boys of NASCAR were at “Hallodega” for Chase race #7. Who got tricked and who was treated to sweet victory on Halloween Day? We’ve got you covered!
Hot: Clint Bowyer. After review, the ruling on the track stands. There was no inconclusive evidence to overturn the call that the #33 was in front of the #29 at the invisible scoring loop. Therefore, Clint Bowyer is the winner! We think…
Not: AJ Allmendinger. If you have to crash out of the race, you might as well make it look good. AJ Allmendinger did just that. Drive safe, AJ. And remember kids, don’t [...]

Redskins Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down

Written by PennSkinsFan | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Redskins)

DISCUSS IT, SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS
THUMBS UP
Brandon Banks.  Why?  He is the only reason the Redskins were in this game.  Period. Banks had a 96 yard kick return for a touchdown that gave the Redskins the lead in the 4th quarter.  He also had a 95 yard kick return for a TD negated by a bone headed block in the back by Reed Doughty.  Banks also returned 5 punts for 58 yards for an average over 11 yards.  He had another impressive return that put the Redskins in Lions territory, in which, they went on to score a TD.  Banks is [...]

New Orleans Saints: Darren Sharper And The Pittsburgh Steelers

Written by Keith Null | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Dawg Pound Daily (Browns), Nice Pick, Cowher (Steelers), Who Dat Dish (Saints)

Free safety Darren Sharper is slated to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers in a pivotal prime time game tonight.
Sharper underwent micro-fracture knee surgery in the off-season landing him on the PUP list prior to the start of the regular season. He was reinstated to the active roster last week before the Cleveland Browns game.
Sharper will be replacing corner converted to safety Malcolm Jenkins because of a rash of injuries in the secondary and by all indications the Saints will enter the contest without the services of their two top corner’s.
Jabari Greer is listed as doubtful with a shoulder injury and a Tracy [...]

Broncos Fall To The 49ers In London

Written by Kim Constantinesco | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Predominantly Orange (Broncos)

The Denver Broncos have a 10+ hour flight back from London, but it may as well be a 14-day flight. That’s how long the Broncos will have to sit with this loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The London Denver Eye witnessed the Broncos 4th consecutive loss just before a bye week. Ever since the Broncos week five loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the season has gone down the tube (no pun intended).
Like many games this season, the Broncos got off to a slow start. In fact, in the first half, the crowd at Wembley Stadium saw a scoreboard that looked more reminiscent of [...]

Carpenter, Dolphins Beat Bengals

Written by Patrik Nohe | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Phin Phanatic (Dolphins)

It wasn’t the way that most fans would have liked to see it go down, but the Miami Dolphins beat the Cincinnati Bengals 22-14 on Sunday behind the leg of Dan Carpenter. This game will likely be a feather in the hat of the fans on the Fire-Dan-Henning bandwagon, but once again the storyline of the day is that the Dolphins could not get out of their own way in the redzone and settled for four field goals (one was a late-2nd quarter drive, we won’t count that one).
Despite a couple of bad drives and a tipped pass that resulted [...]

Minnesota Twins Year in Review

Written by Chris Hannum | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Motor City Bengals (Tigers)

-2010 W/L: 94/68 (-7)
-RS/RA: 781/671 (-36/-94)
-Starter ERA: 4.17 (-0.67)
-Bullpen ERA: 3.49 (-0.38)
-2010 Attendance: 3,223,640 (+807,403)
-Offense WAR: 25.2 (+1.2)
-Defense WAR: -3.2 (+0.6)
-Pitchers WAR: 22.7 (+)
What went right? A major rebound from Francisco Liriano and a terrific campaign from Carl Pavano gave the Twins the best 1-2 punch in the AL Central in 2010 with 4.6 WAR apiece. The Twins bullpen depth, and some smart trades, allowed them to lose Joe Nathan without missing a beat. The Twins offense was among the best in the league, despite a slight but significant regression-to-the-mean by Joe Mauer. [...]

Capital One Cup

Written by Kevin Liao | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | NCAA, Spiked Up, Pysched Up (Track)

I was recently contacted to cover NCAA cross country, indoor, and outdoor track for Capital One Cup.  For those unfamiliar, the Capital One Cup is an award presented annually to each of the top men’s and women’s Division I college athletics programs in the country. Points toward the Capital One Cup are earned and tracked throughout the year based on final standings of NCAA Division I Championships and final official coaches’ polls. One winning men’s and one winning women’s program will be crowned after the completion of the final NCAA spring championships. Each winning [...]

After-Draft Accounts: Austin Kubitza (#153)

Written by Wally Fish | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Baseball

Today’s (actually should have been up yesterday) After-Draft Account covers BA’s 2010 pre-draft prospect #153 who was the ace of the Heritage HS rotation in Colleyville, Texas.
153. RHP Austin Kubitza (18), HS – Texas
The Pittsburgh Pirates spent their 7th round pick on Kubitza. In the first 10 rounds of the 2010 draft, the Buccos selected 9 right handers and just one position player in CF Mel Rojas Jr. (3rd round). Perhaps more important for the hope of the Pirates fan base is that almost all of their team’s first 10 picks were considered tough signs looking for over [...]

Stache Power; Johnson Gets Shutout

Written by Bill Mayer | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Pens Labyrinth (Penguins)

For the love of Tom Selleck, don’t shave the stache! Pascal Dupuis, still sporting the facial hair he was forced to grow after losing the team shootout competition at the start of the month, scored two goals to lead Pittsburgh to a 3-0 win at Carolina Saturday. The victory ended the Pens’ 0-2-1 slide and got their four-game road trip off to a good start.
Dupuis has four goals in 12 games with the stache. Why ruin a good thing? I think Dupuis needs to keep it until he cools off. Arron Asham made a sweet play to set up Max [...]

Vokoun Steals One As Panthers Beat Habs 3-1.

Written by Frank Rekas | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | The Rat Trick (Panthers)

Bill Lindsey Florida Panthers T.V. color commentator said at the beginning of the broadcast that Tomas Vokoun was going to have to steal the game tonight for the Panthers to win.  By making 40 saves, many crucial, Vokoun did just that as the Panthers won their first game in Montreal in almost three seasons.
The effort was significantly better than Thursday’s flat tire for sure, even though the first few minutes looked like another sluggish game was about to be played.  After killing an early penalty it seemed as though Florida got themselves going, and with Vokoun looking solid, they began [...]

Indians Remove Three From 40-Man Roster

Written by Ed Carroll | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Wahoo's on First (Indians)

Actual Indians news!! The Indians have outrighted RHPs Hector Ambriz, Anthony Reyes, and C/OF Chris Gimenez off their 40-man roster. Because this is the second outright for Gimenez and Reyes, they have the option of becoming free agents. Ambriz remains under team control.
These aren’t surprising moves. Ambriz wasn’t going to be a factor this year after undergoing Tommy John surgery this offseason. Reyes would have been arbitration-eligible had he remained on the roster (and you know the Indians couldn’t let that happen). And Gimenez just kind of sucks.
But the Indians have to get the 40-man roster set by Nov. 20th [...]

Brett Favre Will Start Against the Patriots

Written by Dan Zinski | October 31, 2010 | Comments Off | The Viking Age (Vikings)

In the end, Brad Childress didn’t have the nerve to pull the trigger.  Moments ago, Vikings.com tweeted that Brett Favre is active for today vs. the Patriots and will start, extending his vaunted consecutive games streak to 292.
Speculation ran rampant all week that Childress would give Favre the day off and go with Tarvaris Jackson instead.  Indications from Favre were that he would be very unhappy if Chilly didn’t let him play.  On Friday, Favre was able to hobble out on his gimpy ankle and get in some practice reps.
The suspense over Favre had no reported effect on the Patriots, [...]
