Five to Count On?

Written by Logan Burdine | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Rox Pile (Rockies)

The New Year is upon us and the baseball world is asleep. The Rockies are no exception. After a flurry of December and November activity, the Rox appear content with their 2011 squad. Dan O’Dowd and company are avoiding the urge to throw money at overpriced free agents and sticking with the plan to produce major league talent from within. The team pillars, Troy Tulowitzki and Ubaldo Jiminez, are both homegrown talents. Carlos Gonzalez was acquired in return for another player that came up through the Rockies farm system, Matt Holliday. The Rox shrewdly acquired a few pieces through free [...]

Written by Thomas King | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Slap the Sign (Notre Dame)

Yes, it’s a little late for Sun Bowl Preview, I know, but I finally figured out how to put together my interview with Wes Morgan of ESPN Chicago. Much thanks to Don Povia of HuggingHaroldReynolds for setting up the interview. After the jump, Wes …

Where do the Wizards Stack Up in All-Star Voting?

Written by Alex Shultz | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Wiz of Awes (Wizards)

It’s been a tough season for the Wizards, and not surprisingly, they won’t be sending any players to the all-star game in February. Still, it’s interesting to see where some of the Wizards stack up against the rest of the Eastern Conference’s best. Take a look (voting statistics from Associated Press): John Wall: 5th place amongst guards, 169,219 votes (current leaders are Dwyane Wade, Rajon Rondo) Javale McGee: 9th place amongst centers, 59,508 votes (current leader is Dwight Howard) And that’s it. No Nick Young or Rashard Lewis on the ballot. On an unrelated note, Gilbert Arenas actually sits one spot [...]

Quest for Fire

Written by Rick Keene | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | A Winning Hab-it (Canadiens)

Cam Neely and Raymond Bourque took in the applause in Boston. Luc Robitaille, Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri became poster boys for the glamorous in Los Angeles. Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne shed the  ‘ Mickey Mouse ‘ tags in Anaheim. Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clarke  made Toronto fans almost forget that they had not won a Cup since 1967. The Rangers’ faithful watched Jaromir Jagr display his magic hands and placed Mark Messier in Ranger lore to the end of time. Chicago – ites gawked and almost fainted as Denis Savard spun his way into the hearts of the [...]

Daily Deron: Williams, Jazz Fall to Matthews, Blazers Twice in Four Days

Written by chrismaynard | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | NBA, Writing Illini (Illinois)

With Brandon Roy out indefinitely with sore knees, Wesley Matthews stepped up yet again (as has been the case all season) to help the Portland Trail Blazers defeat his former team, the Utah Jazz, last night.

After scoring 14 points during Portland’s 96-91 victory in Utah on Monday night, Matthews dropped 30 points and added 3 rebounds and 3 assists in Rip City during the Blazers 11-point win against the Jazz on Thursday.

Deron Williams led the Jazz with 19 points in the loss.

Here’s a look at the rest of his stats.

And Now We Wait…

Written by Nick Carita | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Halo Hangout (Angels)

It’s been highly publicized that the Angels are close to being the clear front runners in the Adrian Beltre sweepstakes. The A’s have all but pulled out of the race, the Rangers would have to retool their roster including the trading of one of their best players in Michael Young (which I think would be a ridiculous move), and the added sixth year of the contract demands may disappear.

Even though Angel owner Arte Moreno says that his five-year, $70 million offer will not be increased, in all likelihood, it will be. I don’t think that a couple [...]

Drivin’ Deez Nuts: A Defense Lost

Written by deez | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Bear Goggles (Bears)

In a season of anomalies and happenstance, it’s hard to believe in trends, but the Chicago Bears defense is starting to be a concern.  While, we all know that they can change games with turnovers and big plays, those have been few and far between recently. Take away the five turnovers they had against the Minnesota Vikings two weeks ago, and they only have four turnovers since Week 12.  They are also giving up 23.2 points, 368.2 yards and 21.4 first downs per game to opposing offenses. This is not the Bears defense that we are used to. Now, these numbers [...]

The grand event it nearly upon us, and with the long awaited Winter Classic scheduled for tomorrow, today was a more light hearted affair, the Alumni Game. Below are my photos from the day’s festivities in and around Heinz Field. I’ll try to add some captions to some that look like they may need explanation.

Top Gun Tabata Wraps Up Winter Ball

Written by Tom Smith | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Rum Bunter (Pirates)

Much ado has been made about Jose Tabata playing winter ball this season. We took a quick look at the stats Tabata compiled this winter.  One of the first things we noticed was that he didn’t finish strong by piling up hits, but look closer.  Tabata reached base in nine of his past ten games.
He hit well against right handers, in fact all of his hits came against pitchers that threw right handed.  He was 0-for-4 against southpaws with two walks and a strikeout.  Five of his thirteen walks came with the bases empty.  Tabata hit over .350 with runners in scoring position.
Perhaps [...]

Avs Play 20 Minutes, Snap Slide in Edmonton

Written by jhorbay | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Mile High Sticking (Avalanche)

Remember yesterday when Warren mentioned the Avs’ loss to the Wings being ‘the best game the Avs played despite the loss’ (paraphrasing there) well last night, the Avs carried that momentum forward.
For the first period.
Last night in Edmonton, the Avs fired 11 shots at Devin Dubnyk as the Duchene-Hejduk-Fleischmann (and two points from Paul Stastny) caused young children and mothers wearing Oiler colours to flee in terror. It was a thing of beauty.
The refs weren’t calling much last night, for either side, so don’t get your panties in a friggin knot. This brings us to the second period, where the [...]

Moussa commits to Univ. of Colorado

Written by Kevin Liao | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Spiked Up, Pysched Up (Track)

This week, California prep star Ammar Moussa announced his verbal commitment to run collegiately at the University of Colorado.  Moussa, the two-time California Division I state cross country champion, chose the Buffaloes after also considering Oregon, Cal and UNC.  The Arcadia High School senior was undefeated in in-state competition during the fall cross country season and capped off the year by leading his team to the Nike Cross Nationals title. Colorado’s inclusion in the new Pac 12 Conference may prove to be an interesting new dynamic in West Coast recruiting.  Being in the same conference as powerhouses like Oregon and [...]

Detroit Lions 2010 in Review: March

Written by Zac Snyder | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | SideLion Report (Lions)

Previous Month: February
There was a lot of talks about defensive tackles in March. The Lions completed their trade for Corey Williams and Ndamukong Suh elevated his draft stock above Gerald McCoy’s at the scouting combine. It still wasn’t set that Suh was the Lions target, however. Some hoped the Rams would take Suh to increase the Lions ability to trade down with someone that coveted one of the draft’s top two DTs. Saints versatile defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove got a lot of talk as a possible Lions target despite his status as a restricted free agent.
Free Agency also got into [...]

Atlanta Falcons: 5 New Years Resolutions for 2011

Written by Mike Reiter | December 31, 2010 | Comments Off | Blogging Dirty (Falcons)

Its that time of year again. Time to shift the calender from this year and welcome in a new year. With that being said, it is time to look at five New Years Resolutions for the Atlanta Falcons
The 2010 Atlanta Falcons have a record of 12-3, and a team that is one win away from clinching the number one seed in the NFC.
They have one of the most consistent offenses in the NFL led by Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White, and Tony Gonzalez.
The defense has struggled at times this year, but is peaking at the right time. Just look [...]
