Will The A’s Be This Year’s Giants?

Written by Joseph Lopez | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Swingin' A's (Athletics)

Last season, the San Francisco Giants entered the 2010 campaign with strong starting rotation. They did not have a strong lineup by any means, but the Giants did add a few pieces over the course of the season, and surprised us all with their Championship run. They won mainly because of their strong pitching, and will enter the 2011 season with their rotation largely intact. Their bay area rivals, however, enter the 2011 season with a strong staff of their own. The Oakland A’s, who finished in second-place last season, will feature a strong young starting rotation in 2011. Dallas [...]

Reading Hall of Fame Induction Reveals Double Agent

Written by Justin Klugh | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | That Balls Outta Here (Phillies)

We haven’t spoken about the NLCS in a while, and I’m sure you’ve assumed that means one of two things. I have picked up and moved on.  We are closer to the next season than the previous one, so why not let all the negative emotions of 2010 fade away as we raise our hopes for the upcoming year. I have buried the memories of the event under a thick layer of denial and what doctors have described as “psychological homicide.”  It is continuously labeled a temporary solution and appears to be only a matter of time before the blanket [...]

All Star “Extravaganza” Recap

Written by Jared Crozier | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | SenShot (Senators)

Raleigh, North Carolina was the centre of the hockey universe for the first time since they won the Stanly Cup in 2006, as they played host to the NHL All-Star Weekend. THE FANTASY DRAFT In a unique twist introduced this year, the NHL named 42 players as All-Stars, and after that the weekend was pretty much in the hands of the players.  The All-Stars voted on captains, and Eric Stall of the host Hurricanes and 11-time All-Star Nick Lidstrom of the Red Wings were named the captains and had the honour of having their teams named after them. Friday night [...]

Thoughts from All-Star Weekend

Written by Gary Harding | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Eyes on Isles (Islanders)

Carolina did a great job hosting the game.  From what I hear, many were pleased.  I think most of those got some ‘pig’ at the tailgate.  Well – that will make anyone feel good right down to their bones. Liked the format.  Fantasy draft was cool.  It just made it more fun for the guys, especially ones that normally would not get to ‘hang’ with certain guys (West/East, East/West).  Even Kessel, drafted last, get something out of it – so that is cool. As far as the skills were concerned, seeing Michael Grabner (called the best dressed at the All [...]

Three Solid Reasons The Pittsburgh Pirates Will Be Better In 2011

Written by Tom Smith | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Rum Bunter (Pirates)

GUEST POST by Joe: Matt Hunter has a post on Bleacher report titled Ten Reasons Why The Pirates Will Be Worse Than Last Year.  Thus, I thought I would look at three reasons the Pirates will be better than last year. 1-Record They can’t be any worse.  Well, technically 0-162 is the only record you can’t do worse than, but realistically winning less than 57 games is very unlikely.  From 2002 to today the following teams won 55 or less.  Listed below is the teams record that season and the following year: In 2002 Tampa Bay and Detroit both [...]

Panthers Opt For No More Skipper At The Helm

Written by coffee | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Cat Crave (Panthers)

Of all the coaching changes that have been taking place with the Carolina Panthers, there has been one that many fans have been paying careful attention to: the Running Backs Coach.  This coaching position has been held by Jim Skipper since 2002, and has been one of the few spots on the team that has stayed consistently good over those years.  Fans may fondly recall the success of Stephen Davis in 2003, or the fact that the Panthers even kept a strong running game in 2005 despite injuries that led to having to turn to Nick Goings, the team’s sixth string running back.  [...]

Joe Speaks Out

Written by Kristofer Fitze | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | The Ebony Bird (Ravens)

It is truly fascinating that there is such a disconnect with the offense and how all the dirty laundry is starting to air out now that the season is over.  Throughout the entire season, Joe Flacco had more connect and contact with Zorn, than he did with Cam Cameron.  Good plays and bad plays, you would see Joe talking to Zorn on the sidelines, not Cameron.  It seems that Joe has very little to say and do with Cameron.  He doesn’t trust the offensive coordinator and after the firing of Zorn, he let his feelings fly.  Good for him and [...]

Strasburg determined to quit smokeless tobacco

Written by PennSkinsFan | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Nationals)

Washington Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg continues to rehab his elbow.  He is probably about two weeks away from throwing.  Will you see Strasburg this season?  Likely not, but he is well on track for a complete recovery.  On January 13, Strasburg gave an update on his rehabilitation.
“(The elbow) is doing great,” Strasburg said. “I’m well into the rehab process. I have another three or four weeks before I start throwing. Once you start throwing, it’s going to be a long process just getting your strength back. I feel great about it. I have a really good feeling I’m going to [...]

Thoughts on U.S. Half Marathon Championships

Written by Kevin Liao | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Spiked Up, Pysched Up (Track)

Saturday’s U.S. Half Marathon Championships in Houston provided for some intriguing story lines as we head closer to the Olympic Trials a year from now.  Mo Trafeh edged Ryan Hall by three seconds to win the men’s race in 62:17 while Jen Rhines’s return to the roads resulted in her besting Serena Burla in 71:14.  Find full race results here. In his first race since leaving the Mammoth Track Club, all eyes were on Ryan Hall to see how he has adjusted to his new training situation.  The result in Houston appears to be a mixed bag.  His time of [...]

A’s Rumors: Figgins Trade Unlikely

Written by Joseph Lopez | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Swingin' A's (Athletics)

Last week, the A’s continued to make headlines, as the team was reported to have made an inquiry about the  Seattle Mariners’ 3B Chone Figgins. However, the A’s and Mariners were never close to pulling off a trade, reports FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal. The A’s, who would’ve sent over incumbent 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff and a pitcher to Seattle in exchange for the speedy Figgins, are probably done negotiating with Seattle. Rosenthal cites that one of the big problems in the deal was money. The A’s, who have been willing to spend this offseason, still probably wanted Seattle to pitch in for [...]

Hockey For Huggies. Save A Bottom.

Slam Dunk Contestants Selected

Written by Matthew P.C. Holmquist | January 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Dunking with Wolves (Twolves)

Yesterday, we found out who will be competing in the 2011 NBA Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. It will be a wide open playing field with four equally amazing dunkers! …or not. Blake Griffin has been selected to compete, which basically means there is no reason to actually have the other guys even dunk once. It seems this year each dunker gets a coach to help them prep for the contest. Blake Griffin will be given a handicap by having his coach be Kenny “the jet” Smith, while Serge Ibaka gets Kevin Durant, Javale McGee gets Chris Webber and since Brandon [...]
