2011 NFL Mock draft: Greg Nelson post-combine

Written by Greg Nelson | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | NFL Mocks, Other Blogs

Carolina Panthers-DaQuan Bowers, Clemson The Panthers have one of the toughest decisions to make in a long time for a team with the number one spot. In the end, the Panthers get a guy who quite possibly could be the next Julius Peppers. Ever since Peppers has left, the Panthers have not been the same team. They have a chance to get back to the basics and concentrate on defense with Bowers. The QB position is in flux as well, but there just is not a QB worth the first pick of this draft. The Panthers, without a 2nd Round [...]

Player, Team(s) Of The Week

Written by Fetch | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | The College Hockey Blog

I haven’t done one of these posts in awhile, but with the season winding down I won’t get to for awhile either, so I’m going to take advantage while I can. This week I decided to split the team of the week into three parts. First, Michigan, who clinched the regular season CCHA title on Saturday, wresting it away from the grasp of Notre Dame. The Wolverines will also extend the longest current streak of consecutive NCAA tournament performances. Next, out east to ECAC Hockey, where Union won the ECAC regular season championship for the first time in the program’s [...]

Cardinals’ Rotation has a Bright Future

Written by Dan Kienzle | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Redbird Rants (Cardinals)

That’s right folks. Believe it or not, the rotation has got quite a promising future outlook. Don’t believe me? Well then, just sit back, relax, and digest the following… Before we get into the outlook for this rotation, though, don’t think that my words will pertain to this year. The Cardinals will definitely struggle this year with the loss of Wainwright, and most of that struggle will involve the starting rotation. However, that does not take anything away from the exciting outlook for future St. Louis starting rotations. With Wainwright’s return scheduled for as early as this time next year and the developing [...]

Let the March Madness Begin

Written by Dan Kienzle | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Redbird Rants (Cardinals)

With the Cardinals having played their first summer league game in the Grapefruit league earlier today, things are finally beginning to come together. After blogging hopelessly for months now about every minor tidbit of off-season news, it finally seems like the regular season is upon us. The only thing left in between the Cardinals and the 2011 campaign is the month of March. Buckle down, St. Louis fans, because we are in for a little bit of March madness. In the next month, many things will be decided. The starting lineup, the final roster, and most of all, the starting rotation [...]

US U-17s Win CONCACAF Championships

Written by Corey Chatelain | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | The FA Daily (Euro Soccer)

Clipped from: www.ussoccer.com (share this clip)   The United States U-17 mens’ national team defeated Canada yesterday, 3-0, in the final of the CONCACAF u-17 Championships, Central & North America’s continental championship held in Jamaica.   The United States again need extra time as the match ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.  Canada hadn’t given up a goal in their previous 4 matches but the Youth Yanks exploded for 3 goals in the extra periods to bring home the Americans first U-17 continental trophy since 1992. US goals were scored by Nathan Smith in the 92nd minute, Andrew Oliver in the 100th & [...]

Spring Training Baseball: The Last Bastion of the “Eye Test”

Written by Kevin Pajor | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Southside Showdown (White Sox)

As I mentioned in a post earlier this month, spring training can be absolute torture for  baseball fans. About five innings into listening to today’s spring opener on 670 AM, I remembered just how mind-numbingly dull spring baseball is. Yes, it’s relieving and refreshing to tune into the radio or TV and hear the broadcast of a live baseball game. It’s a terrific feeling which truly, in my opinion, rings in the new year. It feels great to know that the White Sox are in Glendale…but that doesn’t’ mean it’s fun to watch. The obvious reason for this is because [...]

The NHL Trade Deadline Is Gone…And Pierre Gauthier Missed The Memo…

Written by Coach K | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | A Winning Hab-it (Canadiens)

SAINT-LAZARE, QC — It was a day Canadiens’ fans waited for with great anticipation. It was the day we would potentially show the rest of the Eastern Conference that this organization wanted to be a contender. While the other 15 teams in the conference made themselves just a little bit better, all Montreal Canadiens’ General Manager Pierre Gautheir did was watch TSN TradeCentre and think, “What was it I was supposed to do today?” It’s been apparent to everyone in the NHL Universe that two of the primary needs on this team are another top six forward and a solid [...]

KICK SOME ASS AND TAKE NAMES LATER: LB COACH OLIVADOTTI’S DIRECTIVE TO PLAYERS!

Written by dawgman1973 (Gary K.) | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Dawn of the Dawg (Georgia)

Our new LB coach, Kirk Olivadotti, who we have inherited from the NFL’s Washington Redskins, if nothing else has the right attitude; comes across with the toughness needed for the position; and seems to know what it is going to take to get production out of our players. In an interview with the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Olivadotti, son of NFL veteran coach, Tom Olivadotti, said that in his first meeting with the players, he made it extremely clear that if they want to play, “They’re going to run to the ball, and they’re going to hit something; that’s [...]

Al Davis Doesn’t Have a Savings Plan

Written by Chris Shellcroft | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Just Blog Baby (Raiders)

If the Oakland Raiders are supposed to be a struggling NFL franchise locked away in a smaller market then nobody told Al Davis. In the last two weeks Davis has done his usual middle finger routine to his fellow NFL owners. In a tense labor climate where billionaires are crying broke, Davis is spending like there’s no tomorrow. Then again, there might not be a tomorrow. That doomsday clock on the CBA looms large. As we’ve come to expect, there are those around the league that are claiming Davis is destroying the very fabric of the game. Not that Davis [...]

Roy Helu’s Combine Numbers

Written by Nic Reese | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Husker Corner (Nebraska)

Did anybody catch the numbers that Roy Helu “Goodbye” Jr. put up at the NFL Combine on Sunday? Well, they were pretty impressive. Good enough to get a mention as one of SI.com’s “risers” (meaning his stock is going up) from Day 2 of the Combine (don’t get overly excited, Jake Locker made the same list). Here’s what they had to say…. Roy Helu/RB/Nebraska: Helu’s stock has been rising since his solid campaign of 2010. He was able to keep the momentum going on Sunday, running faster than expected. Helu’s 40s ranged in the low-4.4s and the ex-Cornhusker also looked [...]

2011 Scouting Combine Report: Defensive Linemen

Written by jamie | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Musket Fire (New England Patriots)

As the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine unfolds, I’ll be passing along the rankings of the players that worked out as they relate to Patriots’ needs. Yesterday I brought you the top performers among the runningbacks and any Patriots-related news regarding the position. Saturday, I brought you the top performers among the offensive linemen. Today, the defensive linemen and linebackers ran through the various drills and positional workouts. Defensive end is my #3 need for the Pats, so today’s focus will be on the defensive linemen group as a whole. Tomorrow morning I’ll post the top performers for the linebacker group, [...]

Hunter Hillenmeyer’s Classy Bears Exit

Written by Boomer | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Bear Goggles (Bears)

Hunter Hillenmeyer was among the Bears’ veterans who were cuts today.  It’s not a huge surprise given the circumstances with his latest concussion in the preseason and season spent on injured reserve. I’ve heard many people who were critical of Hunter’s performance on the field and specifically pointed to his filling in for an injured Brian Urlacher in the 2009 season.  He didn’t play to Urlacher’s level.  Geez, big surprise; not many people could. On his way out, he sent a letter to the Chicago Tribune.  I’ll let you judge how he took the news of getting cut: “I have [...]

Mets to Move Beltran to Right Field

Written by Ben Berkon | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Rising Apple (Mets)

According to the Mets manager Terry Collins, Carlos Beltran will move to right field, which gives Angel Pagan the opportunity to play center field full-time. The announcement is surprising only because the Mets previously seemed adamant about continuing to let Beltran play his natural outfield position despite his lingering knee injuries. However, based on Pagan’s play last season, it is a well deserved promotion. Beltran, who has three Golden Gloves and was widely considered one of the best defensive center fielders in baseball, is actually taking the move quite well. The veteran told reporters, “In my heart, I still feel [...]
