Well crap. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Twins are keeping an eye on Yankees prospects and could be trading Francisco Liriano. While my message for Bill Smith is a simple “don’t effing trade him,” it couldn’t hurt to take a look at his trade value should Bill Smith pull the plug on the 2011 season. Per usual, these values come from Sky Kalkman at Beyond the Boxscore. First off, salary: Liriano is in his second to last year of team control, and is slated to make 4.3 million this season. He should make roughly 6 million next year, [...]
I Can’t Believe I Have To Talk About It, But Francisco Liriano’s Trade Value

Yet Again
Written by Sam McPhee | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | King James Gospel (NBA)
Those true LeBron fans out there will have seen these games all too often. What is it about LeBron James led teams that cannot win the big matches. The Knicks added to the Heat’s abysmal record against not only .500 teams, but the other elite teams, and as more of a statement the Knicks did it in Miami, the first time the two All Star teams have played each other. Miami had the advantage of playing the entire season together, where New York have only had a week, but that seemed to make no difference as the Heat yet again [...]
The Brad Boyes Effect
Written by Jim Bateman | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Sabre Noise (Sabres)
I can sit here and complain about how Darcy didn’t acquire a defenseman or move Tim Connolly; however, I’m going to praise an uncharacteristic move done by Darcy and that is signing a “real” top 6 forward that is still under contract. I put “real” in quotations because of past deadline deals that included busts like Dominic Moore, Raffi Torres and even going as far back as Joe Juneau. Instead of hasbeens and flash-in-a-pans, Darcy dealt a 2nd round pick for a consistent top 6 forward, who at one point showed a pretty heft knack for scoring goals. Brad Boyes [...]
NFL Draft Preview: Best Quarterback Fit For Arizona Cardinals
Written by Scott Allen | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Raising Zona (Cardinals)
Even if the Arizona Cardinals don’t take a quarterback in the first round there is a good bet they pick one up in the later rounds if the timing is right. So the question is who would that man be? If they pick someone in the first round, that guy is probably going top be Blaine Gabbert unless something happens and Cam Newton is still available. Newton probably isn’t a great fit for the Cardinals and from what I hear and read, many of you agree on that point. Of course the hope is the Cards can find a veteran [...]

Kelenna Azubuike Released; Brewer Still to Meet the Axe as Well
Written by Will Woods | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Buckets Over Broadway (Knicks)
UPDATE: Earl Barron just signed with the Bucks in light of Andrew Bogut’s injury. And here I thought he was just waiting by the phone for Donnie to call… From Alan Hahn’s Twitter: Curveball: Knicks announce they have waived Kelenna Azubuike…Expecting [Corey Brewer's] buyout done tomorrow. Azubuike was released just before the March 1st deadline, meaning he would be eligible for a playoff roster should a team with cap room to absorb his $3.3M contract wish to take a flyer. Word was Mike D’Antoni was less than pleased with his progress rehabbing a brutal knee injury. Interestingly, it appears Corey [...]
Tennessee Titans Claim Teams Have Called About Vince Young
Written by Bob Cunningham | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | NFL Spin Zone (NFL)
Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt claims that teams have been calling about quarterback Vince Young since the Titans declared publicly that they would either trade or cut the embattled quarterback. “We have had some discussions,” Reinfeldt told the Tennessean. “But nothing is imminent with him. There is some (interest), but it is hard, though.” It’s hard because the Titans gave up any leverage they might have had. By saying they would cut Young if they could not trade him, they limited the trade market severely. Teams might be willing to make a minimal offer because they’re afraid of being [...]
Brandon Belts Three; DeRosa Homers In Win Over Brewers
Written by Melissa Felkins | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Frisco Fastball (Giants)
The rumors appear to be true, my friends. Brandon Belt is legit. With 3 hits and 4 RBIs today, I think most Giants fans will agree that we’re eager to see him in San Francisco–when he’s ready–and are hoping it will be sooner rather than later. Mark DeRosa is also having a good spring so far, knocking in his first homer this spring in the Giants 10-9 win over the split squad Brewers today. Ishikawa, Eldred and Fontenot all chipped in doubles as well today and Schierholtz went 2 for 3. It’s nice to see those guys contributing and showing [...]
Starting From Scratch
Written by David Lasseter | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | The Rat Trick (Panthers)
Kaboom! That’s the best way I can come up with to describe what GM Dale Tallon has done to the Florida Panthers roster this trade deadline day. Tallon completed four trades, two within the Southeast Division in a day that freed up cap space (A LOT of cap space) for next season. Frank has your recap of today’s action here. As much as this looks bad and is tough to take as other teams gear up for this playoffs, it had to be this way. The team, as it was constructed up until last week, didn’t have much of a [...]
Reimold Gets his Fresh Start off on the Right Foot
Written by Chris Raitzyk | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Birds Watcher (Orioles)
Brad Bergensen started the season the way he finished – in good form. Bergensen allowed just one hit and no runs in two innings of work as the Orioles beat the Pirates 6-4 in the first real game of the Spring. While Bergensen was looking comfortable on the mound, many of the new birds got into the act with their bats. J.J. Hardy, in the lead-off position, got two hits. And Vlad Guerrero, in what we hope is the begining of much more to come, got two hits and the first Oriole RBI of the Spring. But perhaps the “feel [...]
Washington Redskins Part Ways With Running Back Clinton Portis
Written by Bob Cunningham | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | NFL Spin Zone (NFL)
Back in 2008, Clinton Portis carried the ball 342 times for 1,487 yards and nine touchdowns in 16 games started. Over the past two seasons, however, Portis has played in only 13 games total while contributing only 178 carries for 721 yards and three touchdowns. Needless to say, Portis was no longer worth the salary of a starting running back, much less that of an All-Pro back. So the guy who traded him to the Washington Redskins in the first place, Mike Shanahan, cut him from the Redskins on Monday in a move that was expected since the 2010 season [...]
Astros struggle in first spring training game
Written by Brandon Croce | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Climbing Tal's Hill (Astros)
Well this wasn’t how Brad Mills and the rest of the Astros hoped to start their 2011 season. Wandy Rodriguez gave up six runs before his two innings of work was up and the Astros lost 13-3 to the Atlanta Braves. This is not a good sign for Wandy who struggled in the first part of 2010, partly due to the fact that he had a bad spring training. Hopefully, Wandy can get on track in his next start but Wandy can’t take all the blame as no pitcher pitched well for the Astros including Rule 5 draft pick Anuery Rodriguez. [...]
It’s Okay, It Was Only Dustin Penner
Written by Jeffrey Chapman | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Oil on Whyte (Oilers)
So the trade deadline has come, and it has now passed. And don’t get me wrong, I feel that Shawn Belle getting dealt to Colorado for Kevin Montgomery was as every bit as Earth-shattering as the other trade the Oilers swung today. In case you took a long lunch today, the Oilers traded Dustin Penner to the Los Angeles Kings for defence prospect Colten Teubert, a first round pick in 2011 and a conditional pick in 2012. I was really hoping hte Oilers would instead forgo the process of chasing draft picks through trade, and to Steve Tambellini’s defence, Colten [...]

Martin Biron Breaks Collarbone
Written by Adam Herman | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Blue Line Station (Rangers)
Today is supposed to be a day of productivity for NHL teams. Contending teams look to add pieces to enhance the team as they go into the playoffs, while other teams add young pieces to prepare for future years. Rangers fans received news today that was anything but productive when Glen Sather announced that goaltender Martin Biron broke his collarbone in practice today. Apparently, the injury was the result of a puck hitting him. In general, broken collarbones take anywhere between 4-8 weeks to heal, and Sather confirmed that Biron would most likely be sidelined for the rest of the [...]
