When people mention the Los Angeles Dodgers, many images come to mind. Some think about the rich pitching legacy that has marked this team for more than half a century. From the dominance of Koufax, Drysdale, and Newcombe in the ’50s and ’60s to the brillance of Don Sutton and Bob Welch in the ’70s, and the intensity of Fernando Valenzuela and Orel Hershiser in the ’80s, pitching has been the hallmark of this historic franchise. To others, the Dodgers bring to mind the courage and determination of Jackie Robinson as he became the very first African-American to play in [...]

Troy Murphy And Mike Bibby To Sign With Heat?
Written by blcloney | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Hardwood Houdini (Celtics)
Which comes as a total shock, the Miami Herald is reporting that free agents Mike Bibby and Troy Murphy are leaning towards signing with the Miami Heat. This would be a crushing blow to the Boston Celtics, not only would they be missing out on two key additions, the Miami Heat would be addressing two areas of need. The swing could be enough to catapult the Heat over the Celtics once and for all. The Heat have shown an ability to cruise past lesser teams relying on the their Big Three, but have struggled when playing an elite team that [...]
Flames Hope Small Moves Pay Off
Written by Jeremy Wiebe | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Flame for Thought (Flames)
The NHL trade deadline came and went today and the Calgary Flames made a couple of small moves. The Flames acquired forward Frederik Modin from the Atlanta Thrashers for a 7th round pick in this year’s entry draft. Calgary also claimed defencman Brett Carson off waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes. Modin brings a little offensive firepower to the Flames. He boasts a wicked shot though it can be erratic. Modin also has a history with Flames GM Jay Feaster. They were both with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004 when they won the Stanley Cup. Ironically they beat the Flames [...]
Dodgers 6, White Sox 5
Written by Travis Miller | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Southside Showdown (White Sox)
The Dodgers just finished off the Sox down here in Glendale. It wasn’t the prettiest game I’ve ever seen (six errors between the two teams), but it had its moments. THE GOOD Gavin Floyd – Threw two hitless innings, facing the minimum of six batters. He pegged a guy but induced a double-play to erase the baserunner. Floyd failed to record any strikeouts, but just getting guys out is good enough for now. It is February, afterall. Dallas McPherson – Came in to play third base for the second half of the game. He immediately turned a nice 5-4-3 double [...]
Another Buyout
Written by Michael Pina | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Buckets Over Broadway (Knicks)
Corey Brewer, we hardly knew thee. It looks like the Knicks are planning on buying out the former Timberwolf/Gator’s contract, opening up a roster spot for Jared Jeffries. The move is sorta surprising. In order to clear space for Jeffries, we expected a buyout to come, but the fact that it’s an athletic swingman who adds some length on the defensive end is a little curious. Meanwhile, Shelden Williams and Renaldo Balkman are, so far, staying put. The news comes via ESPN’s Marc Stein: The Knicks and Brewer are closing in on a buyout agreement that will make the former [...]
Nationals down Mets 9 to 3
Written by Scott Stewart | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | District on Deck (Nats)
The Nationals successfully opened their spring Grapefruit League season today with a win over division rival the New York Mets. Washington came out swinging in the first with an Ian Desmond triple followed by a single from Bernadina that sent Desmond home giving the Nats the early lead. It was a closely contested game through 4 with the score tied up 3 to 3 at the end of the 4th. The Nats took the lead for good in the 5th with Desmond scoring from 3rd on a Matt Stairs single kicking off a string of 6 unanswered runs for the [...]

Knicks To Buyout Corey Brewer?
Written by blcloney | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Hardwood Houdini (Celtics)
Sources out of New York have the Knicks close to a deal to buy out forward Corey Brewer making him a free agent. The move comes as a surprise to most. Brewer should draw plenty of interest considering he is an above average defender. Sources say Boston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Dallas will all be in the running to sign Brewer. Brewer has been a disappointment since being drafted out of Florida four years ago. Although limited offensively, Brewer would be a solid addition to the bench chipping in on the defensive end. Rumors are circulating that the Knicks [...]
Mike Bibby and Washington Wizards Reach Buyout Agreement
Written by blcloney | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Hardwood Houdini (Celtics)
Mike Bibby and the Washington Wizards have come to terms of a buyout making the veteran guard a free agent. Bibby had been vocal about his desire to be bought out after the Atlanta Hawks sent him packing at the NBA trade deadline. The move does come as a surprise considering the amount of money previously owed to Bibby, some thought the money would be enough to keep him a Wizard for at least the remainder of the season. Mike Bibby will draw an interest from a number of teams. The Celtics, Heat, Knicks and Trailblazers are considered to be [...]

Paxton Signing Imminent
Written by Harrison Crow | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | SoDo Mojo (Mariners)
I’m kind of late to the party and all but there is a reason for it, you know besides having a life. Paxton has frustrated me beyond all else. Reading Prospect Insider you’ll see some great insight by both Chris and Jason, and then of course all the usual suspects have a say. Conor comments over at ProballNW, Jay Yencich comments for USS:Mariner, and then of course Jeff Sullivan has it for Lookout Landing. Jason Churchill left this tidbit in the comment section over at the PI. No, it’s a pretty great thing. The M’s got him cheap (not allowed to share [...]
Orlando Magic Notebook: Becoming Consistent, Arenas Finds His Stroke
Written by Andrew Melnick | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Howard the Dunk (Magic)
Magic Search For Consistency Throughout the Stan Van Gundy era, the Magic have been one of the most consistent teams in the league. They’ve won 59 games in each of the last two seasons, defeated every team in the league at least once last season and rarely lost two games in a row. That hasn’t been the case this season. In the last couple of weeks, the Magic have reached two different extremes. Back on February 13, the Magic dominated the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers en route to an 89-75 victory. Twelve days later, they blew out the [...]
Wizards sign point guard
Written by Spence | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Wizards)
With Kirk Hinrich traded to the Atlanta Hawks and Mike Bibby just bought out of his contract, the Wizards were in need of a point guard to back up team captain and rookie John Wall. That guy will be Mustafa Shakur.
Shakur will be signed for the remainder of the season after being signed to two separate 10-day contracts earlier in the season (first on January 22 and then on February 12). He averaged 3.3 points and 2.2 assists in six games during that stretch.
There you go.

Mike Green out “up to 3 weeks”
Written by Spence | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Capitals)
The acquisition of defenseman Dennis Wideman took on an added importance this afternoon as we learned that Mike Green”expected to be out of line-up up to 3 weeks.” for the Capitals. Green played less than two-and-a-half minutes against the Rangers before exiting with a head injury, his second in recent weeks. He’s now at his offseason home in Calgary due to the death of his grandmother. Green has already missed 7 of the last 9 games after being hit in the head with a puck, so his health for the remainder of the season is not something the Capitals can take [...]
