Redskins release Clinton Portis

Written by Spence | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Redskins)

Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan hinted last week at the Combine that TB Clinton Portis would soon be released. Earlier today, Portis himself took to the radio to say his release could come today. He was correct. The Redskins have released Portis, clearing the $8 million he would have earned this season off their books.
Portis will leave Washington 648 yards short of the franchise rushing yardage record, an honor that will continue to be held by Hall of Famer John Riggins. However, Portis does hold the franchise record for rushing yards in a season. Portis joined the Redskins in 2004 [...]

2011 Marlins Season Preview: Sanchez, the Oft-injured

Written by Michael Jong | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Marlin Maniac (Marlins)

We continue our preview of the Marlins’ starting pitching staff with the team’s projected fourth starter, a player who spent a long time recovering from an injury but may be finally returning to form. Depth Chart 4. Anibal Sanchez Sanchez impressed Marlins fans last season by being the “last man standing” amidst a slew of injuries and changes to the starting rotation late in the season. While Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco succumbed to injury and skipped their September starts, Sanchez remained to anchor the rotation as the team’s best pitcher remaining. He threw an impressive 195 innings, a career [...]

All-Brewers Update #2: A Question of Hitting

Written by Colin Bennett | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Reviewing the Brew (Brewers)

Back again with another roster issue. Who knew putting a baseball team together was this hard? As you know, we have decided to put a spot on the roster for Designated Hitter, considering that the Milwaukee Brewers played in the American League from their inception in 1970 until 1997. While I certainly appreciate National League play a lot more (the reasons which are a topic for another discussion) it is equally important to honor the team’s history, and leaving off the DH position would be ignoring some amazing players in the franchise’s history. The harder decision was who exactly to [...]

Meet Anthony Carter

Written by Michael Pina | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Buckets Over Broadway (Knicks)

A week ago he was idly sitting on Denver’s bench, a healthy scratch in over 70 percent of Nuggets’ games this season. A stiff combo guard standing a shade over 6’1″ isn’t how you’d typically draw up a lengthy career, but that’s exactly what he’s managed. At a ripe 35-years-old and on his fifth team in 11 years, seven days ago Anthony Carter found himself as a throw in piece in one of the league’s most discussed trades in years.  Up to that point, his season high in production was a six points in 16 minutes losing effort to New [...]

Written by Austin Waldron | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Blackout Dallas (Stars)

For any serious NHL fan at all or just knowledgeable hockey fans, we all know that today is the NHL trade deadline. Happens every year, and it seems like a frantic day covered with rumors, actual deals, and way too many people on the edge of their seats. For Dallas Stars fans, building up to this day has been a rollercoaster of possibilities and horrors. Stars fans have dealt with rumors and speculation around the team’s best player in Brad Richards for months. Toronto wants him, New York covets him, and the Kings have showed interest. But in the end, [...]

Prince Fielder Is Still Butthurt By Barry Zito And The Magic Curveball

Written by Ezekiel Escobar | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Frisco Fastball (Giants)

Zito just walked Prince Fielder to load bases. Prince appeared to be barking at Zito from off first base. Still some bad blood, apparently
Per the Baggz.
Maybe big bad Prince will attempt to storm the Giants locker room after the game – only t…

The Talor Battle Era

Written by Ben | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Victory Bell Rings (Penn State)

In light of tomorrow’s Senior night this has been reprinted…or published, whatever this is considered. As the practice gym at the Bryce Jordan Center began to empty it was clear that the few hundred or so ticket holders who watched the Nittany Lions practice hadn’t distracted a senior filled team. Jerseys laid on chairs drying, Gatorade bottles filled an already overflowing garbage can, and the trainers table was covered in bandages from a physical practice. If anything could be taken from the day, it was that this team wasn’t going down without a fight. The lights dimming around the court gave off [...]

Recap: Seton Hall 48 (9) Notre Dame 60

Written by thomasboesen | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Slap the Sign (Notre Dame)

The Irish fought through a tremendously slow start in a 60-48 win at Purcell Pavilion Saturday. Tim Abromaitis (22 pts) and Ben Hansbrough (21 pts) led the Irish back after a 3-14 and seven turnover team effort to start the game.
The Irish win keeps th…

Boring NHL Deadline

Written by Tim Redinger | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Sabre Noise (Sabres)

The Buffalo Sabres stuck true to the form that they would not do anything leading up until the trade deadline until after the current homestand.  The timing of the Boyes deal was based on the fact that he was playing in a contest in Calgary, and the Sabres did it so that he could join up with the team in order to play against the New York Rangers.  As of 1:00PM EST -  the Buffalo Sabres remained silent on making any changes to the team.  With plenty of wholes to fill for a playoff run, not even looking at any [...]

Wow, I guess I know more than I think I do…

Written by bdiddy | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Air Alamo (Spurs)

Hey remember this: (oh, and I wouldn’t be too shocked if Mighty Mouse gets bought-out by the Wiz, his deal ain’t that crazy with only about $8-9mil left on it) Well check this out: Mike Bibby and the Washington Wizards have agreed to terms on a buyout, according to league sources. In a stunning move, Bibby, whom the Wizards acquired from Atlanta last week in a trade for Kirk Hinrich, gave up his entire salary for next season, sources said. The 32-year-old point guard had one year and $6.2 million left on his deal. Okay, I will now stop with [...]

Wizards buy out Mike Bibby

Written by Spence | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Wizards)

Great news, Wizards fans! Recently-acquired PG Mike Bibby has agreed to a buyout on terms amazingly friendly to the Washington Wizards.
In a stunning move, Bibby, whom the Wizards acquired from Atlanta last week in a trade for Kirk Hinrich, gave up his entire salary for next season, sources said. The 32-year-old point guard had one year and $6.2 million left on his deal.
Bibby is eager to sign with a title-contending team after clearing waivers, and sources say the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers are interested in him.
For Washington, the deal is a sweetheart one that will knock next season’s payroll down [...]

Isles Blow the Lead in the Third to the Caps, and Rob Schremp Is Gone

Written by John Panarese | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | Eyes on Isles (Islanders)

A 2-1 lead going into the third period wasn’t enough for the Islanders.  Unfortunately, the Capitals got two quick goals to beat the Isles 3-2 at the Nassau Coliseum. I was, unfortunately, not able to catch most of the game.  I heard the goals by Kyle Okposo and Travis Hamonic, but I missed the entire third period.  Defensive break downs resulted in the two third period goals, and Al Montoya was not, perhaps, as sensational as he has been.  Also, well, Alexander Semen just seems to kill the Isles every game. So, it is on to Washington for the back [...]

Caps acquire Jason Arnott

Written by PennSkinsFan | February 28, 2011 | Comments Off | DC Pro Sports Report (Capitals)

The Washington Capitals completed a nice offensive deal at the very last minute of the NHL trade deadline, shipping David Steckel to the New Jersey Devils for Jason Arnott.  Not a bad deal.
UPDATE:  Throw a 2012 second round pick into the mix going to New Jersey.  Still a HUGE steal in my opinion for the Caps.
Caps give up David Steckel, Jake Hauswirth, and a third round 2011 draft pick to obtain Arnott and Dennis Wideman.  I would say it was a relatively inexpensive day for the caps in which they got a few nice upgrades.
For the season, Arnott has recorded [...]
