After one of the more exciting opening days in recent memory, the Cardinals find themselves exactly where they were at the end of last year: Trailing the Cincinnati Reds for the NL Central lead. With so many emotions running through my head right now, it’s rather difficult to find a place to start. Although opening day games mean relatively little in the grand scheme of things, a lot will be made of Thursday’s action over the next few days. Before getting too caught up in the results, it’s important to take the time to enjoy the fact that baseball is [...]

Game Report: Kuba Downs Panthers 4-1
Written by Tony Mendes | March 31, 2011 | Comments Off | SenShot (Senators)
(source: www.sun-sentinel.com) Your Ottawa Senators took on the Florida Panthers tonight in a Battle of the Basement. With last place in the Eastern Conference on the line, which team’s pride would help them win this game. With Ottawa starting Craig Anderson, Florida counter with back-up Scott Clemmensen as starter Tomas Vokoun was out with back spasms. The first period was pretty fast paced for two teams playing out the stretch. With the game tied two minutes into the game, Francis Lessard and Darcy Hordichuk decided to spark the crowd with a spirited fight as Hordichuk wanted retribution for Lessard’s hit [...]
Devin Hester Debuts in Chicago Parent Magazine
Written by Boomer | March 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Bear Goggles (Bears)
Devin Hester and I have something in common. No, it’s not blazing speed or NFL records. Devin Hester is more than just a wide receiver and kick return demi-god, he’s also a proud papa to 1-year old son Devin. While some locked out NFLers are trying their hands at soccer or boxing, Devin will take his talents to Chicago Parent Magazine. The Devins will take Chicago parents on a tour of fun and exciting things to do in Chicago. Here’s a snippet from Devin’s first article in the April issue: Devin is a little over a year old, and [...]

A’s Notes: Bailey, Harden, & More!
Written by Joseph Lopez | March 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Swingin' A's (Athletics)
According to the A’s official team site, both Andrew Bailey and Rich Harden are “looking good,” and are making progress with their throwing programs. The two pitchers are starting the season on the disabled list, with Bailey out with a strained right forearm and Harden out with a strained right lat. The A’s are optimistic that the two pitchers will continue making progress, but there’s certainly no rush for either player to make a quick return. Bailey, the 2009 ROY winner and 2010 A’s All-Star, has enough supporters in the bullpen to help cover for him while he’s out. The [...]
Tim Byrdak Needs Your Help
Written by Ben Berkon | March 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Rising Apple (Mets)
When it comes to getting left-handed hitters out, Tim Byrdak has got his bases covered–but the new Mets reliever does need help picking an entrance song for home games. According to Mike Silva (via Metsblog), Byrdak plans to let fans pick the song that will play in Citi Field when the specialist comes into a game. The voting process isn’t taking place on a reality television show and Byrdak won’t count raised hands at the opener on April 8th–so how will this voting process go down? All fans have to do is click here, and enter the song of choice, [...]
John Axford wins one for the Reds
Written by Lou Olsen | March 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Reviewing the Brew (Brewers)
John Axford took the ball in the bottom of the 9th today, holding a very comfortable 6-3 lead. After a hit, a walk, a questionable fielding decision by Casey McGehee, and some piss poor pitch placement, the Brewers lost by the final score of 7-6 in the season opener. These are the Cliff’s Notes…… If you do not want to read me going on a rant, this is your official notcie to stop reading. The following several paragraphs are the fan in me lashing out. My apologies to any and all who might not like what I have to say. [...]
What to take away from the game today
Written by Dan Kienzle | March 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Redbird Rants (Cardinals)
Today, on opening day, the Cardinals put in a solid effort, yet they came away with a loss in extra innings. There were many encouraging, positive aspects about the way that the team came together for Opening Day, but there were certainly also a few causes for concern. Let’s dissect the Cardinals first game of the year by looking at five important aspects of the game. 1. Albert Pujols: The subject of in depth off season contract talks and usual opening day performer, the Albert Pujols that we all know and love did not really show up in this game. Starting the [...]
Pirates Cubs Preview
Written by Tom Smith | March 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Rum Bunter (Pirates)
The Pittsburgh Pirates open against the Chicago Cubs today. The Cubs have some questions that might need answered on offense. They lack a true leadoff hitter. Alfonso Soriano is ice cold. Carlos Pena is off to a slow start. Aramis Ramirez seems out to tear apart the NL in his contract year. The Cubs are probably pumped that the Bucs pitching staff is headed to Wrigley. But remember this fact. Robert Redford will be on hand Opening Day. But remember movie pimp… In the opening seriers, the Pirates have nothing to fear in the Cubs starters. Well other than the unknown in [...]
Bolts Beat Pens, Send Message for Post Season
Written by Keara Dowd | March 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Bolts at the Bay (Lightning)
When put up against a wall with something to take, the Lightning showed what they were made of and left the Penguins with the memory of a loss come playoff time. Steven Downie and Martin St. Louis scored in the first period, and that was all the Bolts would need to take a 2-1 decision over their likely 1st-round playoff opponent. Both teams knew what this game was about: setting a tone for the playoffs. It showed with 13 penalties between the two teams and plenty of chippy play. The Bolts were out-shot 35-24, but Roloson was great in net [...]
Pens Can’t Solve Roloson, Lose In Tampa
Written by IronCity | March 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Pens Labyrinth (Penguins)
Probable first-round playoff opponents met in Tampa Bay tonight and it was the home-standing Lightning that emerged victorious, 2-1, despite a decided shot advantage for the Penguins. A stealth wrister by Mike Rupp 4:31 into the third period was the only one of Pittsburgh’s 37 shots that eluded Lightning goalie Dwayne Roloson. Although the tally sparked the visitors and provided a nail-biting finish, the momentum couldn’t overcome a miserable opening period. Tampa outshot the Pens 8-6 in the first, their only advantage of the contest, and got goals from Steve Downie and Martin St. Louis. Roloson made that lead hold [...]

CHRIS MASON! In regulation baby! Not just a win, but a shut out. Chris Mason’s first shut out as an Atlanta Thrasher. With just 22 shots against 43, Chris Mason stopped all 43 shots and brought the Atlanta Thrashers to the win…In regulation, for only the second time since I can’t remember when. To say this win was a miracle is a true understatement. With 7 Power Plays and no power play goals, we were lucky to get the oly goal of the evening, scored by Nik Antropov’s skate, luckily, upon review, NOT in a kicking motion. The Atlanta Thrashers whom, [...]
