Last week, readers of Musket Fire voted on the position the Patriots should focus on most once free agency begins. The outside linebacker position won with 45% of the vote. Therefore, over the next five days, I’ll look at the top five outside linebacker prospects the Patriots could target. Today’s spotlight is on former Tennessee Titan Jason Babin. Last season, the Patriots had the worst third-down defense in the NFL, and that was largely due to the lack of a pass rush. What better solution to that problem than to go after the free agent with the most sacks last season? McKenzie Meets With Ruud
Written by Joey Rodriguez | June 30, 2011 | Comments Off | The Pewter Plank (Bucs)
McKenzie getting a taste of some action. Tyrone McKenzie has not been shy about making it clear that he wants the starting position at middle linebacker. Ever since he got a taste of getting some play time late last season, due to the injury of Quincy Black, he’s been chasing down the chance of getting a starting role. With Barrett Ruud, Adam Hayward, and Quincy Black all entering free agency once the lockout is lifted, it’s possible that the Bucs will not resign all of them and will need someone to step in and fill the shoes of a starter. [...]

The Braves are off today basking in a sweep of the Mariners that included beating a resurgent lefty Erik Bedard (4-6, 3.00, 1.111), the star of their pitching prospects the superb Michael Pineda (7-5 /2.08/1.029) and last year’s AL Cy Young winne…

Will Billy Beane turn Oakland into sellers or buyers at this year's trade deadline? (Photo Credit:fangraphs.com) The Oakland Athletics entered the season with high hopes and a hunger for a division crown, but fast-forward 82 games into the season, and you’ll find the A’s in last place in the AL West and on the fringe of playoff contention. GM Billy Beane set out last winter to upgrade an A’s offense that ranked 23rd in runs scored (663), 17th in batting average (.256), 16th in on-base percentage (.324), 26th in slugging percentage (.378), and 28th in home runs (109). So far, [...]

Remember when Carmelo Anthony first hurt his elbow? It was his second game as a Knick and they were facing off against the lowliest of the low Cleveland Cavaliers. Anthony fought through numbness, played terrible, and through his efforts, ultimately g…

Lockout Coverage Worse Than Brett Favre Coverage
Written by Chris Shellcroft | June 30, 2011 | Comments Off | Just Blog Baby (Raiders)
I would rather endure a 24 hour Brett Favre Comeback News Channel than have to see one more ESPN update on the lockout. Wake me up when the lockout ends. Enough with these ridiculous reports of progress being made. Spare me the rumors of secret phone calls and meetings. I’m waiting for Chris Mortensen to find a napkin that DeMaurcie Smith dropped at a TGI Friday’s with some dollar figure scribbled on it. No doubt ESPN would have rush to air pictures of the napkin before Smith comes forward stating he was only trying to figure out the tip for [...]
GAME 3 RECAP: Mets Can’t Best Verlander; Tigers Win 5-2
Written by Ben Berkon | June 30, 2011 | Comments Off | Rising Apple (Mets)
Rick Porcello? No problem. Phil Coke? Laughable. Justin Verlander? Well…he’s pretty darn good. Verlander had to throw 120 pitches, but he still bested the Mets offense, hurling seven innings, giving-up seven hits, one earned-run, two walks, while striking-out six batters. Aside from a Dan Murphy and Carlos Beltran homerun, the Mets bats were pretty silent. In addition, Mike Pelfrey, who had previously walked just three batters the entire month, surrendered five free passes to the Tigers. Big Pelf also gave-up eight hits and five runs (four earned) in 4.6 forgettable innings. The Mets took two out of three from the [...]

Aaron Rodgers is a fan favorite and a champion. Raymond T. Rivard photograph Aaron Rodgers talked this afternoon about staying in shape, improving, winning another championship, the lockout, and of course, golf, during an interview with media leading up to his participation in the 22nd annual American Century Championship golf tournament to be held in Lake Tahoe, Calif., in a couple of weeks. While looking forward to playing golf in this great tournament, Rodgers also talked a lot about football and told reporters that the Packers are well positioned to possibly earn more than one more championship in the coming [...]
