Wieters, Markakis, and Hardy Finalists in Gold Glove Award

Written by Lauren Tilley | October 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Birds Watcher (Orioles)

I recently wrote an article discussing which Orioles had the best chance of winning a Gold Glove this season. I mentioned J.J. Hardy, Matt Wieters, Nick Markakis, and Adam Jones. And boy was I spot on. Hardy, Markakis, and Wieters are all in the top 3 at their position for the Gold Glove. As for SS: Hardy, the Angels’ Erick Aybar, and the Indians’ Asdrubal Cabrera are finalists for the award. Player Games Errors Fielding Percentage Hardy 129 6 .990 Aybar 142 13 .980 Cabrera 151 15 .976 Based on the numbers, Hardy looks like the clear winner. However, one [...]

Bullpens of the American League: Part 2, the Closers

Written by Chris Hannum | October 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Motor City Bengals (Tigers)

We all know what it takes for a relief pitcher to be good, the same things that make any pitcher good (in a statistical sense or otherwise). What makes relievers different from other players is that being good isn’t enough for a player to matter – for a reliever to make an impact they need to combine performance with leverage. Leverage is a finite ‘resource’ to spread around a bullpen, so some relievers matter disproportionately more than others – one reason why ‘ERA’ or ‘WAR’ don’t give you the real story of bullpen quality. Every bullpen (except maybe Minnesota’s) has [...]

LSU-Alabama Week: Perfectly Adequate QBs Accent Showdown

Written by Kyle Kensing | October 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Saturday Blitz (College Football)

ESPN dubbed 2011 “The Year of the Quarterback” in college football. Brandon Weeden, Case Keenum, Andrew Luck, Kellen Moore, Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson and Landry Jones — the list of statistic-producing slingers around the Bowl Subdivision is indeed impressive. Yet, the nation’s two best teams feature quarterbacks whose most noteworthy statistic is they have no really noteworthy statistic. Both LSU and Alabama are teams defined by defense. Neither has allowed an opponent more than 21 points all season. In the month of October, an opponent scored no more than 11 on either of this give-no-quarter units. With air raid, [...]

Most of the so-called baseball experts predicted the 2011 Astros would lose about 100 games. But a strong second half in 2010 gave Astros fans reason to be more optimistic. It turned out the experts were right. Houston suffered through the worst season…

49ers Extend Five Game Win Streak With Victory Over Browns

Written by Eric Melendez | October 31, 2011 | Comments Off | Niner Noise (49ers)

The 49es extended their five game winning streak and a four game lead in the NFC West with a 20-10 victory over the Browns on Sunday.  The 49ers leaned on the defense again to keep the lead and hold off the Browns in the second half.  The 49ers played well in the first half with a 17-3 lead heading into halftime.  In the second half the 49ers offense was almost non-existent and played inconsistent throughout but luckily they have a high quality defense that was able to limit points scored by the Browns.  The 49ers were expected to win the [...]

Detroit Lions’ Win Reassures Motown Faithful

Written by Zach Berridge | October 31, 2011 | Comments Off | SideLion Report (Lions)

Admit it: no matter what your commitment level is to the Honolulu Blue, you had some doubt about what was going to happen Sunday against the Denver Broncos following two straight losses. If you’re a long-time Lion supporter, more than a decade of let-downs preceded your expectations, while newer fans might have questioned their durability or been afraid of this guy name Tebow whose been glorified in the media. Either way, I don’t think there were too many people outside the organization that expected THAT kind of beat-down(all of the predictions here at SLR were within 7 points of Denver’s [...]
