The New Orleans Saints have locked down their QB of the present, for the future. Â Today, after a tumultuous off-season of back and forth negotiations, the New Orleans Saints and QB Drew Brees have agreed on a five year deal worth 100 million dollars. Â The deal will give Brees 60 million dollars guaranteed with forty of that coming in the first year of the deal. Â Shortly before the news broke, Brees took to Twitter to announce it on his end.
“Deal is Done! Love you, Who Dat Nation. See you soon!”
While the deal is not record breaking as many believed it would be, it does put an end to at least one black-eye for the Saints who have gone through a publicity nightmare since the 2011 season came to an end. Â Immediately following the news of the deal, many in the mainstream media took to the airwaves and netbooks to kick out there predictions for a New Orleans Saints NFL Championship year or to squash the hopes by reminding Saints fans that the team is still dealing with turmoil resulting from the leagues punishments surrounding “Bounty-Gate“.
While Jonathan Vilma continues to sue NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for defamation and the NFLPA continues to challenge the legitimacy of the sanctions imposed on the players by the Commissioner, some in the Saints fan base point to the northeast as a reminder of what happened the last time the NFL had a “Gate” to tackle. Â There are those in the media such as Steve Wyche from NFL.com who believes that the Saints will rally around Drew Brees and the absence of Sean Peyton similarly as the New England Patriots rallied to a perfect regular season following the “Spy-Gate” scandal.
Others, such as Charlie Casserly believe that the rest of what surrounds the Saints will still have a major impact on the outcome of this season, including specifically the six game suspension of Peyton’s replacement Joe Vitt.
For now however, the Saints and more specifically Drew Brees can rest knowing that the “Franchise Tag”, a hotly contested item during negotiations , will not be in Brees’ future for a third time. Â Full details of the deal have yet to be released to the media.
