Yesterday Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin promised that Zack Greinke would be traded before the July 31st deadline. Melvin stayed true to his word, shipping the right hander to the Los Angeles Angels today in exchange for top prospect Jean Segura and two minor league pitchers.

ANGELS GET:

BREWERS GET:

P – Zack Greinke

 IF – Jean Segura

P – Ariel Pena

P – John Hellweg

This is a mega trade for the Angels who now have a pitching rotation that features, C.J. Wilson, Jared Weaver, Dan Haren and now Greinke. Ervin Santana has been struggling recently, but the addition of Greinke, the Angels now have one of the most solid rotations in baseball.

A bonus that comes out of winning Greinke, is that they keep him away from rival Texas. It had been speculated that the Rangers were the front runners to get a deal done with the Brewers, but now that Los Angeles has him, they have the weapons to gear up for a serious run at the AL West crown in 2012.

As for the Brewers, they replenish their farm system after betting the farm on Greinke a few years ago. Milwaukee gets Jean Segura who is one of baseball’s top prospects and is a guy Doug Melvin hopes will soldify his infield. Segura was recently called up by the Angels and it’s not yet known if the Brewers will keep him at the Major League level or send him down to AAA.

Milwaukee also picked up minor league pitchers Ariel Pena and John Hellweg.

Doug Melvin promised a Greinke trade and it came less then 48 hours after said promise was made. Under the new CBA however, the Angels will not get a draft pick if Greinke leaves in free agency. Melvin plans on reuniting with Greinke at that time.
