Some late game heroics by Alex Morgan lifted the United States women’s soccer team into the gold medal match. The Americans edged Canada after Morgan’s go-ahead header in the 122nd minute. There were just thirty seconds left to go when Morgan put the ball in the back of the old onion bag.
Abby Wamback tied the game in the 80th minute to set up overtime after a controversial handball call. USA eventually edged the Canadians 4-3. Christine Sinclair scored all three goals for Canada.
“I’m still in shock. I just got my head on it at the end and I didn’t even see it go in,” Morgan said after the match. “I still can’t believe it. It was a crazy battle. Credit to Canada.”
USA was forced to come from behind three different times during the semifinal match. They will now advance to the gold medal match where they will face Japan.
Team USA and Japan will be a repeat of the 2011 World Cup final where Japan took down the Americans. Team USA will be looking to exact revenge on the Japanese team and bring the gold home to the states.
The gold medal match takes place on Thursday.
