American’s Wonder: Why Was Pau Gasol Playing for Spain?

PAU! What in the name of Kareem Abdul are you doing playing for Spain, asks American's on Twitter.

The rest of the world regularly takes chip shots at Americans for their occasional lapse of intelligence (see: brain fart). And during the London Olympics, American’s didn’t do themselves any favors when they were watching the gold medal basketball game between Team USA and Spain and taking to Twitter to ask a question that seemingly had no good explanation.

Why in the world was Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol playing for Spain?

I mean, he’s got a house in America, plays in America, works in America and earns a good ol’ fashioned American pay check. So why is he committing the highest of high treason by betraying America to play for Spain?

The Twitter-verse was begging the same question. Just take a look at some of these gems:

Because he’s Spanish.

If I multiply the two, and cary the one….THIS IS SO CONFUSING!!!

Yes, in fact Gasol is an ancient and historic American name.

Because he’s from Spain.

Yes. Because he’s from Spain.

Clearly it’s a conspiracy concocted by David Stern and the folks that staged the moon landing and framed Lee Harvey Oswalt.

Yeah! A’MURICA!!!

…..yeah.

So clearly the concept of the Olympics and the notion of national pride and the fact that not everyone comes from and is owned by America isn’t fully understood.

Hooray! America!!
