Rafael Nadal withdrew from the 2012 London Olympics last month due to a knee injury and he has now pulled out of the U.S. Open. Nadal has been out of action since he a major upset thanks to Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon on June 28th. The knee injury has continued to plague him.

“I am very sad to announce that I am not ready to play the US Open in NY,” Nadal, wrote on his personal Twitter account. “Thanks to my fans for their support and especially, the New Yorkers.”

Nadal had ”magnetic resonance imaging examinations on his knees” during Wimbledon according to a Spanish newspaper.

Losing Nadal takes away a lot of the star power from this year’s tournament field. Nadal participated in last year’s U.S. Open but lost Novak Djokovic in the final.
