Robert Griffin III may have been able to handle the Buffalo Bills, but he hadn’t run into the Monster of the Midway until Saturday night. The Chicago Bears gave the second overall pick a nice ‘welcome to the NFL‘ game, sacking Griffin III three times, forcing a fumble in the process.

Israel Idonije made Griffin look like the rookie he is one one play in the first quarter. Griffin took the snap and then proceeded to run for his life from Idonije, who popped Griffin good when he caught up to the speedy quarterback, knocking the ball loose and cueing a loud roar from the Bears faithful in attendance at Solider Field. Julius Peppers was in on the play too, picking up the fumble.

Idonije was in on one and half more sacks on the night, all of which came in the first quarter. After Griffin didn’t fare much better and didn’t seem to shake  his Idonije demons. He finished the night 5-for-8, throwing for 49 yards. He played all of the first half before being replaced by Kirk Cousins, who actually had a decent night.

When Griffin left the game, the Bears were leading 20-10. When Cousins came in, Washington roared back, outscoring the Bears 21-3 in the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t pull out the win in the end.

Besides the RGIII storyline, the Bears had some excitement of their own. Saturday night marked the debut of Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall running the same offense for the first time since they were teammates in Denver. On the very first play, Cutler nailed Marshall for a 41-yard pickup, electrifying the Chicago crowd and setting up one of two first quarter touchdowns by backup running back Michael Bush.

After looking sluggish in their fist game, the Bears looked sharp all around on Saturday with the guys who needed to step up stepping up. The Redskins on the other hand looked like they were being led by a rookie quarterback. To make matters worse, the Redskins lost Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Orakpo and safety Brandon Meriweather to injuries.
