We are only one night in to the college football season and we have already witnessed one of the dumbest plays we will see all year. When almighty Kent State Golden Flashes took on the Towson Tigers, a routine punt was kicked by Kent State and it grazed a Towson player. That is when all insanity ensued.
Kent State’s Andre Parker recovered the muffed punt return and started running with the ball. One problem — he was running in the wrong direction.
Perhaps what is more fascinating is that the Towson defenders chased Parker down. They could have let him run all the way into the opposite endzone for a safety but they instead ran after Parker and tackled him 58-yards later. The play was botched by both teams.
I’m not sure whether I am more dumbfounded by Parker running in the wrong direction or by Towson making a saftety-saving tackle.
To put the icing on the cake, the referees finally realized that they should have blown the play dead at the Towson seven yard-line. Perhaps they were just drawn in by Parker running the wrong way and just didn’t know what in the world was going on. It is quite impressive, however, that Kent State, Towson and the referees seemed to screw up in the same play.
In the end, Kent State ended up running away with the game and taking down Towson by a score of 41-21. The season opener will be forgotten as the season moves on but Parker’s play will live in ESPN Not Top 10 infamy.
