David Akers is in his 16th year as a kicker in the National Football League but on Sunday afternoon he made the biggest field goal of his career. With seconds winding down in the first-half, Akers lined up for a 63-yard field goal. Akers hit the kick with the low trajectory that was needed to make the distance and he nailed the crossbar.
Despite hitting the crossbar, Akers kick bounced through the uprights and was good. The kick tied a NFL record for longest field goal in history.
Here is video of the kick:
The kick sent the 49ers into the locker room with a 16-7 lead halftime lead over the Green Bay Packers. Akers’ boot will give the 49ers all of the momentum heading into the second-half and could give the team the boost they need to hang on and bring down the mighty Packers.
