The Baltimore Orioles have been on a tear in September and are one of Major League Baseball’s biggest surprises this season. While the Orioles have been on fire and surprising their world, apparently the team plane wanted to join in the fun. Per Steve Meleswki, who covers the Orioles on MASNsports.com, the team plane had to have an emergency landing after a small fire on board.
The Orioles‘ team charter flight bound for Tampa-St. Petersburg, Fla. tonight had to make an emergency landing near Jacksonville due to a fire on board, sources say. Everyone is reportedly OK, but maybe a little shaken as the plane apparently had to make a rather rapid descent in landing. The fire was reportedly in the kitchen area, and it appears that no one with the club was injured.
A member of the Orioles’ baseball operations department, Ned Rice, took to Facebook to give an account on the scary surprise.
“Small fire on our team flight to Tampa Bay,” wrote Rice. “They came on and told us we needed to make an emergency landing, and then we were nearly free falling for a few minutes as they raced to get us on the ground as fast as possible. Currently enjoying the beautiful Jacksonville, FL airport while the fire department inspects our plane. Hope this trip is worth it!”
Despite the scary situation, the Orioles now have a reason to celebrate. For the first time since 1997, the team is bound for the playoffs after the Angels lost last night. It was a long 14 year stretch of losing that has finally come to an end.
