Alabama No Longer Recruiting Player Facing Rape Charges

In a not so surprising move, it is being reported that the Alabama Crimson Tide are no longer recruiting 19-year-old Deon “D.J.” Johnson after he was arrested twice on rape charges. The Spanish Fort standout wide receiver had verbally committed to Alabama just five months ago but his string off off-field troubles have scared the Crimson Tide away.

Johnson originally found trouble when facing second-degree rape and sodomy charges after a relationship with an underage female. Just three weeks later, Johnson found himself in trouble again and was this time arrested on a first-degree rape charge from a seperate incident.

After those damning charges, it is no surprise that Alabama would distance themselves from the recruit.

Johnson is listed as the 13th best player in the state of Alabama, per Rivals.com. In his junior season at Spanish Fort, Johnson hauled in 19 touchdown catches. Because of the off-field troubles, Johnson is prohibited from playing high school football this season.

As a result of the arrests, Johnson is out on bail and has been placed under house arrest. He is only allowed to leave the house during school hours.

Johnson also had offers from LSU, Auburn and Mississippi State. There is no word on whether any of the teams are still interested in the wide receiver but you’d have to believe his chances at playing division one football took a serious hit.
