Tragedy struck last week when a Chicago Bears fan, Chris Pettry, was murdered at a bar in Jacksonville, Florida just hours before the Bears were set to play the Jaguars. Pettry leaves behind his wife and three children. As the family is still in mourning, the Chicago Bears organization has stepped up in a big way.

A handful of Bears players — led by tight end Kellen Davis — have set up a fundraiser set for Saturday night to raise money for the Pettry family. Davis has set up a website online where you can donate to the cause if you are unable to make the event. Here is what Davis had to say on the site:

"As a Chicago Bear I would like to support this family in anyway I can by passing along an easy way to donate whether its $5 $10 or $100. To make other donations or items for raffles please Contact Wayne Jett @ Sideline Marketing 1-815-529-3447. William C. “Chris” Pettry was murdered in Jacksonville, Florida, Sunday morning, October 7, 2012. Karen Pettry is a stay-at-home mom. Chris had his own business and provided for the family. Through a violent, senseless act, Chris can no longer provide for Karen and their three children. Thank you on behalf of my marketing team and I."

Many players are set to be in attendance for the event including Tommie Harris, Jason McKie and Davis.

“I just thought it was such a senseless and just a terrible thing,” Davis said. “It was pretty much a no-brainer just helping out a fellow human being who is in distress.”

It is a great gesture by the Bears to step up and help the family in need.

The Bears are using the platform they have been blessed with to step up and give back to the community. It is the kind of story that more deserves the national attention and the type of story that we unfortunately don’t get to hear much of from national sports teams.

If you would like to help the Pettry family in any way, you can DONATE to the cause HERE.
