The San Francisco Giants have named their starter for Game 4 of the National League Championship Series after dropping game 3 of the series to the St. Louis Cardinals in a rain delayed showdown in St. Louis. The win gave the Cardinals a 2-1 edge in the NLCS.

Following the game, the Giants announced that Tim Lincecum will get the start in game four after three relief appearances in the postseason. Game four will be the first time Lincecum takes the mound as a starter this postseason.

He’s the guy we want out there,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Lincecum will go head-to-head with Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright on Thursday.

During his postseason appearances, Lincecum has seemed to find his touch with an impressive 1.08 ERA,  nine strikeouts and only one walk. He appears to have returned to the form that earned him the Cy Young Awards twice.

With Lincecum making the start, game one starter Madison Bumgarner will take his place in the bullpen. Barry Zito will make his second postseason start in game five.

“I think we feel that it’s time to give Madison a little break,” Bochy said. “He’s a young kid, 23, and he’s been pitching a lot of innings. We feel at this point that we’re better off giving him a little break and going with Z, who has done a nice job for us.”

The next question for the Giants will be whether or not Buster Posey or or Hector Sanchez will be behind the plate.
