South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier has never been one to bit his tongue so we should not be surprised with the quotes coming out today. The only surprise from Spurrier’s comments may be that he is complimenting a SEC foe.
Spurrier, who has coached at both the professional and collegiate levels, said on the Dan Patrick Show today that he believes the Alabama Crimson Tide would be able to compete with some of the weaker teams in the NFL.
“Alabama, gosh, they look like they could beat a couple of those NFL teams that I’ve watched on Sundays,” Spurrier said. “I think a lot of the oddsmakers out there, that usually know what’s going on, I’d guess Alabama would be favored by a little bit.”
While it is nice for Spurrier to talk up his rivals, it is completely outrageous to suggest that a college team — no matter how talented — could compete with a NFL team.
At the college level, some players will never see a NFL roster. . Just look at that Alabama team that Spurrier is praising. Maybe 20-25 players will make it to the NFL. In the NFL, the talent is the cream of the crop.
If Alabama was to play any team in the NFL, it wouldn’t even be close. The NFL team — even if it would be the Cleveland Browns — would run away with the game. Games are won and lost in the trenches and the difference in age, strength and experience between opposing lineman would be too much for the college kids to handle.
What do you think, could Alabama handle a lower tier NFL team?
