Today has been a busy day for the Kansas City Chiefs and the news continues to roll in. Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel has relieved himself of defensive coordinator duties as the team continues to struggle. Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports that Crennel said he decided to make the change so that he can devote more time to the entire team.
Linebackers coach Gary Gibbs will be the Chiefs defensive coordinator for the remainder of the season.
“We have a young team and some guys, the perception may be that I’m a defensive coach, that I’m a defensive coordinator, and I don’t care about other parts of the team, which is not true,” Crennel said.
“But their perception may be that. By my being with them more, I think they will see I’m concerned about the whole team.”
It is an honorable attempt by Crennel but it is a last ditch resort in an attempt to save his job. If the Chiefs continue down the horrendous path that they are currently on, both Crennel and General Manager Scott Pioli will be unemployed following the season — or perhaps even sooner.
For the Chiefs, it won’t be getting any easier. They face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers next eek on Monday Night Football.
