There has been much made about the struggling Jets and their steadfast faith in starter Mark Sanchez. Despite pleas from loyal and frustrated fans, the Jets are sticking to their guns and are refusing to bench Sanchez in favor of backup Tim Tebow. Rex Ryan has time and time again come to that podium and dish his support for Sanchez, but he’s never said he’s not starting Tebow because he doesn’t believe in him.
His teammates aren’t so shy, with one saying of Tebow, “he’s terrible”.
Either it’s the losing, the constant questions about Tebow or a combination of both that has the Jets locker room lashing out at Tebow. When asked about both Tebow and Jets third string quarterback Greg McElroy, offensive lineman Matt Slauson didn’t mince his words.
“We have a quarterback…and an athlete.” he told the New York Daily News. While Slauson, who you might remember from that diry chop block on Texans linebacker Brian Cushing, wasn’t afraid to attach his name to his quote, other more harsh quotes were left anonymous.
“Hell, no!” one Jets starter said when asked if he’d support Tebow as the starter. “You got to keep defenses honest. You just can’t line up in the Wildcat all the time. That won’t work.”
Dissension in the Jets locker room is nothing new. Last season ended with teammates polarized about the play and leadership of Mark Sanchez, with Santonio Holmes making headlines for his mutiny. With the same thing happening this year with worse results in the win column, it appears that whether or not Tebow starts, the writing is on the wall for Rex Ryan.
