Often times when a professional sports athlete gives up his jersey number to the new member of a team, the athlete will make outrageous and selfish demands in exchange for the number. Whether it be paying a hefty price tag or buying a new vehicle, the players exchange the number for something that will benefit them.
That was not the case for Detroit Tigers right-handed pitcher Rick Porcello who made on of the most honorable deals in memory.
Newly acquired Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter has worn number 48 for his entire career, so when he signed with the Tigers Porcello knew a call would be coming his way. Porcello ended up giving the jersey number to Hunter in exchange for donations to Hurricane Sandy relief. Porcello is a New Jersey resident, so the relief donations are something that mean a lot to him.
It is a great, classy exchange on both players ends. Hunter gets the number he has been associated with his entire MLB career, while Porcello gets to raise money for Hurricane Sandy relief. It’s a win-win.
Let’s hope more professional athletes see this gesture and take the selfishness out of jersey number exchanges in the future.
