The New Orleans Saints will be without running back/return specialist Darren Sproles for a second straight week as he recovers from a broken hand. There was some hope that Sproles could return this week, but he’s a late scratch for the Saints afternoon game in Oakland.
That means for a second straight week the Saints will have to balance the workload out of the backfield between three more than capable backs. Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram and Chris Ivory will again split carries which is really only significant for those who may own them in fantasy football, as these back have proven in weeks past they can carry the load.
In fact, Sproles being out is a blessing in disguise as if he was active, the Saints would have four running backs to rotate between. New Orleans has been criticized this season for not opening up the running game, something that has proven to help them succeed in the past. But in recent weeks, the carousel of running backs have helped the Saints get back to the offense we’re used to seeing.
And at the very lest, the Raiders defense is horrible and their run defense in particular isn’t anything to be proud of. Oakland is just two weeks removed from being gashed by Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, and this trio of NFC South runners from New Orleans are salivating at a chance to add to their highlight reel.
