Byron Leftwich got the start on Sunday night football due to a shoulder and rib injury that starter Ben Roethlisberger had suffered in last Monday night’s nail bitting win over the Chiefs. But now the Steelers are a week past the Roethlisberger injury but in the same spot with their backup, as the Steelers are concerned Byron Leftwich will be out “a while” after suffering a shoulder and rib injury last night.
This leaves Pittsburgh with s slew of nasty options with even nastier outcomes. They could start Roethlisberger and bring him back early, but all reports have indicated that if that happens, Big Ben is risking further and more significant injury. Pittsburgh could trot a hobbled Leftwich out, but we saw how bad a healthy Leftwich was.
A third option would be to sign a free agent, and it appears the Steelers are exploring this option. Pittsburgh is expected to work out a hefty amount of quarterbacks this week, but there isn’t a public list of names that will be trying out. One has to believe that with the slim pickings out there, guys like Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen will get calls.
There’s always the nuclear plan — start Charlie Batch.
Batch filled in a few years ago and actually wasn’t that bad. But he’s even older, even rustier and the Steelers have virtually no wiggle room in the AFC wild card hunt. The options aren’r pretty, but something has to be figured out in Pittsburgh if the Steelers want to make the playoffs. But even if they do, a banged up Steelers team led by Brodie Croyle strikes fear into absolutely no one.
