This season for the Buccaneers has been one of wonder and magic but it’s not been absent of injury. From Davin Joseph to Adrian Clayborn and Carl Nicks, it seems the Bucs can’t go three weeks without putting a major name seeing their season end with a trip to injured reserve.
According to a report in USA Today, Buccaneers wide receiver Arrelious Benn will see his disappointing season end soon as he is going to be placed on IR. A source informed the paper that Benn’s nagging knee injury is not getting any better and the team is going to give him ample time to heal by ending his season.
The move would make a lot of sense since Benn has rarely played this season and when he has played it’s not been the memorable (no pun intended). There was even talk back in the preseason leading up to the regular season that Benn could be used as trade bait or even just straight up cut.
With the emergence of Vincent Jackson as the guy the Bucs were hoping he would be and thusly the growth of Mike Williams in combination with strides made by Tiquan Underwood, Benn has seemed expendable. There’s the age old statement of well we’re winning without him and while that may bode true in this case, having Benn around has never been detrimental to the team’s success.
Further suggesting that Benn’s season is done: the Buccaneers are expected to sign wide receiver David Douglas off the New York Giants practice squad to offset the loss of Benn. No official announcement has been made on Benn but one is expected sometime after the Holiday.
