As the North Carolina State Wolfpack continue their search for Tom O’Brien’s replacement, they were watching the MAC Championship Game between the Northern Illinois Huskies and Kent State Golden Flashes very closely.
Lousiana Tech Bulldogs head coach Sonny Dykes and Clemson Tigers offensive coordinator Chad Morris were interviewed by North Carolina State on Wednesday and Dykes emerged as a favorite after Morris allegedly had a rough run through the interview process.
Now, it is being reported that the Wolfpack will be turning their attention to the MAC Championship coaches for their next round of interviews.
Northern Illinois’ Dave Doeren and Kent State’s Darrell Hazell are both set to be among the next wave of candidates interviewed for the N.C. State vacancy, per the Fayetteville Observer. The Wolfpack’s search for their next head coach took a brief hiatus due to Doeren and Hazell’s involvement in the MAC Championship game.
An interesting note in the N.C. State head coaching search is that athletic director Debbie Yow hired Parker Executive Search for $90,000 to assist in the search.
What is the connection? Parker Executive Search is the firm that helped Northern Illinois hire Doeren from Wisconsin back in 2010.
While Doeren has a connection and Hazell will be involved in the next stage of interviews, it is still believed that Sonny Dykes is the leading candidate for the North Carolina State job.
