Northern Illinois Huskies head coach Dave Doeren is a very wanted man after winning two MAC Championships in his two years as a head coach. Doeren was the target of teams like the Auburn Tigers, Purdue Boilermakers and North Carolina State Wolfpack and it looks like the 40-year-old coach has made a decision.
Per a source, Doeren has finalized a deal and has become North Carolina State’s head coach.
N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow confirmed the news.
“Coach Dave Doeren is a highly motivated overachiever who shares our goals to pursue aggressively a high level of achievement in the classroom and on the field of competition,” stated Yow.
Doeren released a statement of his own to express his excitement moving forward with the Wolfpack.
“I am honored and excited to join the Wolfpack. NC State has world-class facilities and fans that are second to none,” Doeren said. “I want to thank Chancellor Woodson and Debbie Yow for this tremendous opportunity. My family and I can’t wait to get to Raleigh and become Wolfpackers. While I look forward to our future at State, I want to acknowledge and thank the Northern Illinois players and fans for their support the last two years, especially President Peters and Jeff Compher [athletic director].”
North Carolina State’s head coaching search was put on hold until the conclusion of the MAC Championship which featured Doeren. He was refusing to discuss any possible coaching changes before the game, but it appears that he has quickly moved on to a new home.
Doeren has a 23-4 record as a head coach.
Prior to becoming the man in charge at Northern Illinois, Doeren was the defensive coordinator for the Wisconsin Badgers. Despite being a defensive-minded coach, Doeren’s offense averaged an impressive 40.8 points per game.
The news that Doeren will be the next head coach at North Carolina State comes as little surprise after discovering a link that created a strong connection between the two sides.
The Parker Executive Search firm helped Northern Illinois hire Doeren in 2010 and, in an interesting twist, the firm has been hired by North Carolina State athletic director Debbie Yow for $90,000 as they continue their search for Tom O’Brien’s replacement.
With Doeren’s departure, Northern Illinois offensive line coach Rod Carey is expected to be promoted to the vacant head coaching position.
